I must admit, I am seriously stunned by some of the comments being left here by some people who seemingly feel perfectly OK in passing the buck on to Apple for this, when in fact they are to blame for some of their problems, allow me to elaborate...

As an OS X ACSP in-training, the FIRST thing we're always taught is BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP your data before you do ANYTHING to ANY device, in case something should good astray, which it often does, regardless if Apple made it or not. Remember, all Apple products are made by human beings, with flaws and deficiencies, and thus the products are not infallible and can also suffer from deficiencies.

To the people here blaming everyone but themselves for not doing a backup, which Apple has made so easy with iCloud backup on iOS, all I have to say is, tough. I have no sympathy of people who don't backup their data and then go whining and crying about it, and blaming the manufacturer. An update can have issues due to the myriad of configurations and installed content on a device, so things can go wrong. And please don't throw up the "but Apple makes and controls both hardware and software" crap. That only goes so far. With a platform that has over 500 million users and devices, there's bound to be some scenarios that Apple cannot anticipate, and will run into difficulties, and thus reiterating my point of doing regular backups!

To those complaining that Apple didn't test this update nearly enough, seriously, you just need to keep those kinds of mindless comments to yourself. I just skimmed all the major Apple and even non-Apple tech blogs, and NO WHERE is this being reported as a major issue. In fact, most people commenting on those blogs are overwhelmingly reporting complete success and improvements with the 7.1.2 update. While I'm not discounting the fact there is a small issue with the update for a very small number of users (myself being one of them), this does not appear to be as wide spread as some of you are making it out to be, so please just stop spreading FUD.

And finally, addressing those who haven't fixed your home button, I again say, tough. I have a lady at my workplace, where I am a Sys Admin, who constantly keeps coming to me with problems with her iPhone 4S, because she refuses to replace the power button. Each time I tell her, "this wouldn't have been an issue if you just fixed the button", to which she always responds "OK, I'll do it later, but for now can you just fix it?" I even offered to perform the repair, saving her a ton of $, and she still procrastinates. I finally told her NO, I won't be doing any more fixes, and she got so upset with me, I just told her you're wasting my time, and the resources of my department, by not taking our advice, and even free labour, so we will no longer be helping you.

People, BACKUP YOUR DEVICES, and FIX THE POWER BUTTON. If your button is broken, or the device hasn't been backed up, very simple, DON'T UPDATE IT! And if you're in a rush to go to work, or somewhere important, common sense kicks in here, and should tell you not to muck around with your device at this time!

Do I have to point out that this conversation would not be happening if the bloody update worked correctly?? Apple is to blame.

I've wasted my entire morning doing a complete restore due to Apple's failings and now I'm being branded a liar! What a great start to the day!

I've owned 20+ Apple Macbooks, Mac Pro's and iMac's over the past 10 years. Not once has a complete system restore been needed after an update, especially when using the latest hardware.

This is why I am very confused about this situation is happening with my iPhone 5s.

Please try and not be so short sighted... Just because YOU haven't personally had any of your Mac's need a full restore, does not mean no one else has. I support several hundred Mac and iOS users at work, and I HAVE had those situations, so they do occur.

And while I'm not saying Apple isn't responsible for this bug, as they have admitted to it, I'm saying those who have additional issues with lost data can blame themselves for not backing up.

There has to be an alternative to the time consuming and irritating deletion of all files, images, videos, messages etc...which then need to be restored. Is that not something that you would like Apple to think about?

Why can't the system just be deleted and restored? This would save hours of restoring time if Apple get's it wrong (...judging by your experiences this happens VERY frequently!)

Are all the hundreds of Mac's you support all the latest models? Maybe that's where the discrepancy lies.

While I feel for those that lost data, I'm also inclined to agree with EdisonW. Rule #1 when you own ANY device that stores data is to keep it backed up. Rule #2 is to ALWAYS back it up before making any significant changes including, but not limited to, updating it. Even as an IT pro I've failed in the past to heed these two rules and I've gotten lucky about 99% of the time. For the 1% that failed, I knew I had only myself to blame.

Even for those that are non-techy- everyone knows that you make copies of important paper documents. If not, and it get's ripped, wet burned, lost, etc. then you have yourself (and not the desk/file cabinet/house/weather/coffee maker/dog/etc.) to blame.

The Mac's I support span models from 2003 to current, and the occasional error has happened on all generations. In the last 1.5 years, I've had 4 Mac's that needed a complete restore, out of a fleet of about 150+, so no it doesn't happen often, but does happen.

As for the time consuming effort to restoring all your media, I stated it earlier, iCloud Backup. It restores everything except my music, which is then a quick sync to iTunes, so again, do it right, and you'll have minimal frustration if stuff goes wrong,

Early on June 30, Apple officially released the newest version of their mobile platform, iOS 7.1.2, which was meant to fix some minor issues behind the scenes, with a major focus on bug fixes and security updates. Unfortunately, the update process isn’t going so smoothly for some.

The Apple Support Community for iOS saw new additions pop up as some users tried to upgrade their device. As many have pointed out, the update can stall half- or a third of the way through, leaving some people to stare at gears that turn, but nothing else happens. The consistent issue seems to be going through Settings –> General –> Software Update, where the gears will continue to grind, but the update has reportedly frozen. Fortunately, there seems to be a fix.

A hard reboot is reportedly fixing the situation for those who have tried it, after their update stalls. If you are suffering through the same issue, here’s what to do: hold down the Home and Sleep/Wake button for several seconds. Do not let go until the screen goes dark, and you see the Apple logo appear. Release the button combination, and wait for the device to boot back to life.

This should complete the update, so make sure to check through Settings –> General — About, and see that you’re on iOS 7.1.2. If you’re not, just go through the update process again, and you should be good to go.

Did you suffer the stall issue? Did the hard reboot work for you?
