I know how to fix the iTunes 7 / firmware ver. 1.2 freeze problem

Many of you (like me) are having major headaches because of the new updates that Apple has been releasing (i.e. iTunes 7). So far I only know that this affects the Video iPod, but this could very well fix other models too.

Here are some symptoms of what the following will fix, and what you most likely have already done to try and fix it.

- iPod keeps freezing after a few seconds ever since you updated to iTunes 7 and/or iPod software ver. 1.2.
- iPod will remain in Do Not Disconnect mode even after ejecting or disconnecting
- A forced reset does not fix it, as it repeats the above.
- Restoring the iPod through iTunes does not help

So, here's what to do.

The old iPod updater software is how you will fix all of this. Unfortunately, because iTunes 7 thinks that it's better and more up to date, it will prevent you from opening the old version of the software if you still have it on your machine.

So first of all, uninstall iTunes 7.0. (You do not have to remove your library information, just the software.) Restart the computer.

If you still have the old iPod updater, try it and see if it runs. If it does, read on. If not, skip to the next paragraph. So, if it does run, simply hit Restore and you can go back to a previous version of the firmware. I believe that Apple discontinued the firmware page since releasing iTunes 7. Look around some search engines like Google if you really want the latest firmware.

Take out the installation CD that came with your iPod. Run it and it should install the old iPod updater along with iTunes 6.x. iTunes 6.x cannot run since iTunes 7 changed your libary's formatting, but that will not be a problem. Run the Restore process in the old updater and it should be alright for you to start loading your stuff on again without problems.

Since iTunes 7 reformatted your libary listing, iTunes 6 will no longer work. However, you can still use it by reinstalling iTunes 7. Just make sure you do the following.

TO KEEP THE SAME THING FROM HAPPENING AGAIN

iTunes 7 is actually alright. It's the updater part of it that will screw up your iPod.

- iTunes 7 will tell you that a new iPod software version is available when you open it.
- Check the "Never Ask Again" box and click Don't Install.
- When you sync your iPod to your computer, NEVER touch the Version section when you're changing your iPod's settings. Everything else is alright to work with.
- Everything will work fine as long as you never update the iPod's software via iTunes, at least until the programmers can fix this issue in a later release or patch.

I hope this helps out a lot of you. Pretty lame of Apple to miss something this big during debugging.

I have a 5G 60G Ipod that was also freezing. I pulled the download for the 6/28/06 release, but before I applied it, I figured that I'd try reformatting (RESTORE from Itunes7) staying with 1.2 and see if that made anything better.

Of course, I reloaded back 6500+ songs, rebuilt the files/directories that I had when using it as a drive, and reloaded my photos and Pod casts.

That all happened last night.

I'll let you know how it goes, but so far so good.

Itunes 7 has KILLED my ipod.
I went to do the update and now it is completely dead. It wont turn on, or restart and my Mac doesn't even think its there when I plug it in.

I tried to run the older iPod updater but it tells me to plug an Ipod in....when its already plugged in.

I'm gonna take it home and see what my MacBook Pro thinks of it - cos that still has the older version of iTunes. If not I think I might have to go to the Apple store and see what they say. Its still under warranty thank goodness...

On MAJOR problem - all of my music is on it and I can't access it in any way to be able to get it off.

This may not be an answer people want to hear, but I found that simply Restoring the iPod before putting the new firmware on kept any problems away from my iPod.

When I saw that it was going to determine gapless info on every single song on my iPod, I hit the stop button and just restored it. Then upgraded the firmware. Then moved music onto it.

No problems ever since.

I installed iTunes 7 and haven't had any problem with it. I had wanted to update my iPod so I could get games on it but the update button wasn't clickable.
I realize that a lot of people have had problems but also that some have not.
Do you think it's worth it to give the update a try and hope for the best?
If I do and it goes wrong is there a chance I'll lose all of my music? cause I have 5,000 songs and they're not all on my computer so that would be a major problem.

So I'm just asking for a bit of advice i guess.

jackphil, if you value your 5000 assets, I'd advise against upgrading or least back it all up before doing. Mine is performing random hard resets whenever it feels like it, very frustrating. Search the forum and you'll see others have worse variations of this reset problem. This version 1.2 is a real flop, how the heck did it pass QA? I will revert back when I find the time.

well, i tried this and worked. after u uninstall itunes 7.0 and take ur ipod's installationion cd and get back to itune 6.5 u couldnt open the old itunes version because of a library conflict. Anyway it did install the old ipod updater. So well, if u open the ipod updater and it says: Invalid ipod service (it happened to many hundreds of times)u could unplug the ipod and then open the ipod updater. In this case the ipod updater will not recognise ipod (its not plugged in fact) so it ill show u a message with all version it has. Well, in that momento u must plg again the ipod but Wait!!!!!!. YES!!U WILL SAY : i cant because my ipod is frozen. so well, u must plug it and restart it inmediately (select/menu buttons pressed during 6 seconds) and the ipod updater will recognise it and will allow to restore it. Well this worked for me. C ya!
