Mainstage 3 / MOTU Ultralite Mk3 Hybrid driving me crazy

Hi,

I get constant dropouts when trying to use MainStage 3.0.4 with MOTU Ultralite Mk3 Hybrid interface. And everytime the dropouts happens I get these messages in the console. Sometimes over several hundreds of them when things are really bad.

AND...it gets worse whenever I go to a rehearsal or live onstage. Go figure that one out!

kernel[0]: IOAudioStream[0xffffff8052709000]::clipIfNecessary() - Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead of last clip position (1e2,158)->(1e5,428).

I do not get these errors when using internal audio only.

I get no help from MOTU who are saying that there's no problem with the hardware.

I have received a second MOTU Ultralite interface. Same problem.

I have tried both USB (with nothing on the bus except the interface) and Firewire (over Thunderbolt-adapter). Same problem.

What is happening?

Please help me!

Here's my computer specs:

MacBook Pro Retina mid-2012

Processor: 2,7 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

OS version: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

Hi again everyone,

Some good news from MOTU is that they have confirmed the issue, and are working directly with Apple to resolve it. MOTU technical support have confirmed that this is an issue with Mavericks and the Ultralite, although the problem may not be confined just to the Ultralite. At the moment it's unclear whether a fix will come in a future Mavericks update, or will come with Yosemite.

Tomas, I may have an explanation for your most recent troubles. There are 2 reasons why the Mac sometimes loses its connection with the Ultralite, in my experience:

1. The laptop is put to sleep and woken up - after this there are often problems with losing the connection

2. Using a Macbook Air, Macbook Pro and a Mac Mini with 3 different Ultralites, I have had trouble with bus power via Firewire - whether using a Thunderbolt output and adaptor (Macbook Air), or a FW800 port (Mac Mini and Macbook Pro). Since moving to USB and the external power supply, I have had no problems at all with the audio interface disconnecting. I have made MOTU aware of this issue but it seems that they broke something when changing to a FW800 port on the Ultralites.

Hope this helps. I would say don't be too quick to blame Apple for all these troubles - I think it's fair to say that there is a compatibility issue, but hopefully MOTU will be able to iron this out.

Hi Steve,

Wow, that was some really good info. Thanx! 😀

I will keep my eye on the future reports with users of Yosemite and Ultralite.

Regarding the connection issue. I think my machine did sleep before the loss of connection. So thanx again! I will turn off all powersaving-stuff.

And use USB.

Finally off to play some music with a clear and calm mind onstage. 🙂

Of course I can't give any 100% guarantees, but so far I've had no problems with Mountain Lion, USB and external power supply, after a week of pretty solid rehearsals. The only issue I've had seems to be specific to MainStage, with occasional weirdness if I've been using it for a few hours. So I always shutdown and restart before a performance.

8 hours of pure performance :-)

running logic pro x on mavericks with 25 heavy duty plugins on live audio inputs, mac mini on 70% cpu all the time. 32 samples buffer only. the mac mini is really warm now :-)

no audible glitches or crackles or anything, "console" didn't report anything.

and by the way, during the performance test i surfed with safari, made a time machine backup and lots of other stuff you don't do during a gig. still works.

don't wanna blame motu in general, my micro book interface from motu still runs without the kernel problem, so i think, that a new ultralite firmware should maybe fix that.

anybody from germany here, who wants to buy my ultralite? :-)

Hi again,

a friend of mine just did 50 shows with an artist using a redundant system with 2 mac minis, 2 ultralights, backing tracks and live keys, one system on mavericks, the other on mountain lion. all shows were running from the mavericks, they didn't use the backup once... he told me, that they used the latest ultralites with fw800 ports, and they also used external power supplies, cause they had problems with bus power in the rehearsals, and they changed to the latest ultralite edition with 800 ports.

so this also might be something to look after, if anybody here still has these issues. the best chance might by NOT to use thunderbolt adaptors and USE external power supplies. Maybe usb and external supply will do the job also.

Still very happy with my RME here :-)

I just wanted to hop onto this train and confirm I am having the exact same issues. Brand new 2014 SSD MacBook Pro running the very latest Mavericks, with a MOTU Ultralite MK3, and am having random glitches with silence drop-outs that last about a full second. Sometimes they only happen once in several hours, sometimes they happen within minutes of each other, and it's the exact same console error listed by others (IOAudioStream clipIfNecessary() - Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead...)

I am using USB, directly in to the MacBook, with external power to the MOTU.

I have a gig on Friday night and don't have the time to format and re-configure my system before then. Thankfully my set is short, and it's a small crowd (sometimes that's worse). I'll be praying to the Apple Gods that nothing goes nuts.

C'MON MOTU. FIX THIS, PLEASE.

Sorry to hear that you also have these errors. But I'm happy that it is now validated and hopefully beeing worked on by those who can.

I did a live radio-gig with my unstable machine. With backingtracks and heavy keyboardsetups. So I know how you feel going onstage tomorrow.

Wish you good luck!

After your successful gig I would recommend you downgrading. It is such a relief. 🙂

Cheers

Hello again,

Well, I have just bought a brand new MacBook Pro 13" Retina for an artist, and unfortunately it seems that it is now impossible to boot from a Mountain Lion install drive. The same procedure I've used for 3 other Macs is not working.

So it looks like I'm stuck with Mavericks on this one, unless I can figure out a way of tricking this new laptop into thinking it can run Mountain Lion (which probably isn't a very good idea). Let's hope MOTU get this sorted out QUICKLY. I will email my contac there and see if he has any news.

On the bright side, the artist I'm working for already has Mavericks on her other show laptop, and is using the Ultralite with no problems (the only problem was the device disconnecting but I think that was because of the bus power not working properly, as discussed earlier in this thread). She is now using the external power supply and connecting via a Thunderbolt/FIrewire connector.

Hi Steve,

That sounds so strange. Hers is working? So this is a sporadically appearing problem. Really strange.

I also read that they tie the OS'es to the specific hardware more and more. I don't like that development.

I also hope MOTU gets their stuff together soon. Because in the end I will switch computer and will be forced to run the latest OS. 😟

Didn't think I would ever say that last sentence. But now I'm there.

Cheers.

Tomas
