iTunes 11.3 freezing when refreshing podcasts

I downloaded iTunes 11.3 yesterday and each time I have refreshed my podcast subscriptions since then I've had to 'Force Quit' due to the application freezing. When I try the second time it's better, though still slow. Anyone else have this problem? 11.2 was fine for me.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Apple has caused you a lot of trouble, fixed part of it after almost a month, never said sorry, but you thank them

amazing slowly slowly I begin to realise that Apple has to be regarded and treated with the same respect and humility as royalty.

They are a profit oriented company, they make money out of us and they treat us like underlings - and we thank them for it

Not so long ago Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan hit a peaceful demonstrator, the protester afterwards apologised - somehow Apple seems to get the same mind-set from its customers

be patient - in another month or two or three Apple will fix that issue with another MINOR update ... since our Japanese co-commentator doesn't have the issue I consider your outlook to be rather bleak

but seriously I think it is terrible for you - though I still have lots of issues with iTunes Podcasts, none of them I had in 2006, when I first started using it I am able to use it with a tweak here and a tweak there - one of the tweaks being that I have unsubscribed to a lot of podcasts because with the amount of time Podcast-admin now demands I just can't keep up with them all.

Minor podcast-offerers take note - it is you together with your listeners or potential listeners who will feel most of the pain

but since Apple-users tend to thank Apple rather than expect an apology when it has fixed something partially it did wrong in the first place I don't expect much consideration for your pain from them

Silkfromdeu - I think many Apple users tend to develop Stockholm syndrome...I have now upgraded to 11.3.1 and can use the List view to manage and download podcasts without any of the freezing issues I had before. However, my subjective view is that overall iTunes performance is still slower than previous versions and that usability has taken a backward step. And there are still some weird things happening, like podcast episodes I've listened to and deleted then re-appearing, whereas episodes I haven't listened to sometimes get deleted randomly. Nonetheless, it's better than it was - I feel relief rather gratitude.

Thank you for the sharing your issue.

I just received word back from Apple Support and they will be working on iTunes further on the issues you and I have with large podcast libraries.

So I am too expecting an update that will fix this issue.

In terms of the problem stated in the the title of this thread, the download problem has been resolved. So I will not refer to this thread any longer.

Since many different issues have arisen for different users in this thread, in working with Apple Support, I can only suggest that any other issues be brought up in new separate posts. I have also found that it is best to not stray off track and state the issue you are facing precisely so other users and possibly Apple can look get what is needed to solve the issue quickly.

Oh, and when you contact support and are not getting things resolved, ask to be put in contact with the top technical support person. In my case, since the issue could not be resolved, the issue was documented by the technician recording my screen. It was then that I asked to have this thread included in the documentation. Then this was sent by the top engineer to the engineers in Apple HQ who followed up with me. Please note I passed along as many of the others issues as I could from this thread as well.

Thanks goes to chrisevers for originally posting this issue so that I could have Apple Support in Japan document to and be referred to by the technicians in Apple HQ.

I will now be signing off from this thread as I need to clear my mailbox.

Thanks to all! 🙂

Cheers! 🙂

hi ozdazza

according to my (German) Apple support desk helper (5 hrs in all on 12.07.14) there is no top engineer.

The service you are getting in Japan seems to be unique unless you are still under a service contract, then actually service is superlative. But that is available for only 3 years and no extension possible.

Before you showed up here opinion was unanimous that Apple didn't monitor these threads and we were thus on our own exchanging tips and tricks.

Thus with you gone, none of any of your remaining grievances have a chance to get noticed.

But then as some said around here we have to be grateful to Apple for having fixed the thing back into usability and to expect it to go back to past perfection is really to be asking too much.

... and as chrisevers said, yes there are indications of Stockholm syndrome rampant around here.

in short losing you is losing my last hope that something will be done - since it took your top engineer practically a month to get HQ Apple (seat of royalty) to take care of the worst it should make all realise the kind of value Apple credits its not mainstream customers with.

I think Apple is working with podcast producers who want to delete old episodes. Despite the default and all my subscriptions being set to save episodes I have to explicitly save them otherwise they disappear after they're synced to my iPod, played there and re-synced. This is a manual chore. Apple trying to leverage on cloud storage but not properly assessing performance is causing the podcast sync issue in list mode. That part of the code needs close attention.

... and I can't delete those I want to delete

the weird thing is that I can delete them from ListView and MyPodcastView but I still lack an idea how to make them go from the playlist

i.e. I have to delete twice but that works only with the non-intelligent playlist - in the itelligent one they stay and stay and stay ... and I wreck my brain trying to find a logical explanation for that - of course it makes me angry every time I have to do the extra stuff

In order to keep the admin load on a tolerable level I have un-subscribed from a lot of podcasts - thus those who put so much work and effort into their offerings lost their customer. Why would Apple do that to them? Why does none of them show up here and tell us how compllaints are handled. Don't they care? don't they know?

All very mysterious - maybe some aliens have taken over
