iTunes 11.3 freezing when refreshing podcasts

I downloaded iTunes 11.3 yesterday and each time I have refreshed my podcast subscriptions since then I've had to 'Force Quit' due to the application freezing. When I try the second time it's better, though still slow. Anyone else have this problem? 11.2 was fine for me.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

I had to interrupt update all in List View each time because the cooling devide (ventilator) got louder an louder by the second also the CPU in activity show (my translation) went into bright red very quickly. In MyPodcasts the update all takes place within about the same time as it did before though the header telling me how many stored ones I have and other info has become meaningless.

Today I checked on my old MacBook which still runs on 11.2.2 what the update promised to do. Podcasts weren't even mentioned neither was iTunesU which Apple by now lumps together.

Apparently they felt sure that whatever they altered it'd have no influence on podcasts - Thursday has gone by and they haven't come up with an update.

They certainly deserve lots of rewards for their diligence and competence and whatever else there is.

I will not touch the List View again before they have come up with an update that mentions either podcasts or iTunesU. Apparently they also had a mistake in iBooks after the update 11.3. For that they provided an update Sunday last. The difference is of course that iBook customers spend money and podcast enthusiasts probably don't (I don't since I have never yet seen a podcast offering that interested me that wasn't for free. Glorious BBC certainly doesn't ask for money and for their stuff I'd gladly pay.

My conclusion while I wait patiently for Apple getting generous enough to repair the damage done is that I am no longer the kind of customer Apple wants.

... which means I will not spend one more cent on their hardware ... Before I let myself being treated like a free-loading unwanted customer I'm even willing to switch to Microsoft. Or Android once audible will have come up with an app for that system, currently it's only Apple and Microsoft and at audible I spend money gladly.

no, since about 3 years iTunes Podcast comfort is deteriorating

Please note that 11.3 didn't even mention podcast or iTunesU. What we are dealing with is collateral damage and since iTunes Podcasts never became as easy to handle as it used to be I think it is un-hip backwater for Apple by now. And yes I have noticed that they have added an attractive feature here and there but I'd give up on all of them gladly if they'd restore the once perfect without ever having to consult help it had way back then when they were so perfect so self-explaining that I threw my windows equipment away.

I wonder whether the Yahoo podcast works on the Mac - BBC recommends Yahoo right next to iTunes. Having to be afraid of getting one's favourite entertainment unmanageable with every update is not my idea of what a valued(?) customer should have to go through.

Itunes - open Window - Downloads --- default has a button checked to allow Simultaneous downloads.

Could not find anything on it in the ITUNES documentation (and unchecked it).

ITUNES documentation on PODCASTS says that you have options to setup when Podcasts will be Refreshed - or choose not to refresh.

Appears to be modification to the software to allow you better control Podcasts refresh particularly if you have a very large group of Podcasts.

Hi to all

just for the record - today is Monday July 21 - I downloaded the fatal for podcasts List View and annoying for podcasts MyPodcasts view on Friday July 11 (morning) - on Sunday Apple sent an update to correct mistakes concerning iBooks i.e. they notice when they have erred

But podcasts? who cares about them, they aren't buyers, their plight isn't even acknowledged ... after more than 1,5 weeks - they haven't even listed 11.3 on their feedback site which makes me guess that by their reckoning podcasts is in top shape and our complaints are all due to ignorance and/or un-geek-worthy equipment.

Have you ever tried refreshing from the 'all unplayed' screen. It works for me. I am too unhappy that Apple is dragging this thing out. If an upgrade, like this one, is not good, they don't give you an option to return to the last version. We've heard from people with iPhones, who got their phones bricked, by updates. This version of iTunes is a problem judging by the number of posts. My biggest fear is that Apple will wait until the Yosemite upgrade to release a new version.

Jul 21, 2014 3:42 AM in response to samike1951

yes Samike

I took that advice (from you?) - it updates as OK as it does in MyPodcastView but is even more awkward to select - I download for listening on the shuffle maybe a bit more than 10 % of what's on offer.

Yesterday I noticed another really annoying "improvement" - on those podcasts where I had set on loading all they stop that when they decide that I haven't listened to an episode as recently as they think I should. And if I have reset it to download like for some BBC-offerings (In Our Time, Thinking Allowed, History Extra and others) they stop it again after a couple of days unless I put it back manually on download all.

This is becoming what we call in German ArbeitsBeschaffungsMaßnahme (ABM) - Work Providing Procedure. The expression is outside official unemployment insurance only used whenever a boss keeps overcrowding your workload by completely useless tasks.

Hi Samike

latest podcast mystery (from Bavarian radio drama)

in MyPodcasts it says I have 138 unplayed podcasts and 109 secured

in Unplayed it says that I have no unplayed whatsoever and if I have any secured then my harddisk knows nothing of them

Note for Apple: Surely this is all owed to my geek illiteracy and low spectrum equipment (which used to work find)

then in the topline there is another one MeineSender= my providrs(?) - that one beachballed almost to crash level but somehow managed to get of the 100 % CPU signal and iTunes doesn't react state by itself - the list it offers confuses me even more - life in iTunes podcasts used to be so simple but - note for Apple: surely I only complain because I am of advanced age and as everybody knows us silver surfers are never up to anything new.

Jul 21, 2014 7:02 AM in response to ozdazza

for ozdazza and all

latest revelation

example: Bavarian radio drama should have updated but didn't - I clicked on the arrow on top which says it will show in iTunes Store and much to my surprise it did what it promised and there I saw that I should have gotten offered new ones in My Podcast for download - I clicked back and lo and behold they were there

My conclusion: trust nothing but your memory and if it says that there should be new ones try the above and if that doesn't work any other you can think of - my be Feed'd do the trick also.

But of course all this is none of Apple's doing it is all the fault of those who provide the podcasts - and if I assume for a moment that that is true then the question is why is Apple so willing to take it on the chin and doesn't tell us?

I wish Agatha Christie would write a novel about it - so many clues so few facts.

I can't even open iTunes now. It takes forever to load and then it's eternal spinning ball on podcast list view. No recourse I can think of but to force quit (itunes unresponsive). When I get the chance and can borrow a cell phone to be at the computer (tethered to hard drive) I plan to try to contact Apple Support for help. Meanwhile I keep hoping today's the day for an update that fixes this obvious problem.

if your iTunes Podcast opens in list view and beachballs immediately and so persistently that you don't have a chance to access the menu (right click on podcasts in list view?) to manual then it is best to call the help desk. After that use any of the other views - they work slowly and awkwardly and give often mysterious information but they don't freeze (at least not for very long) and crash.

Jul 23, 2014 11:59 AM in response to Silkefromdeu

Thanks, Silkefromdeu!

I scheduled a support call and was with Josh for about 40 minutes—most of it diagnosing the problem. Ended up trashing a few files from the Library to get iTunes to start again from scratch. I won't say the problem is fixed but I'm rid of the spinning beachball, at least for now. I will avoid the List view in Podcasts. I tried a refresh in My Podcasts and a few were automatically downloaded but not all of them. I was able to get rid of the exclamation points for podcasts I haven't listened to recently that had stopped downloading.

Josh said they are aware of the problem and know that it's an issue for a number of people. He didn't say when there would be a fix or how hard they are working on it, but I'm imagining it will happen eventually.

I probably should have pressed for a reversion to the previous iTunes version. I sure don't need an upgrade in HD movie features—I've never watched any in iTunes

Jul 23, 2014 1:32 PM in response to cdrumm

The problem is not happening to everyone who updated ITUNES.

Also may not be happening to everyone with PODCASTS.

I suspect it depends on a combination of size of memory, available disk space, connection speed, and the number and size of podcasts you have that are trying to get updated at the same time.

That is a tricky fix as they cannot just set a max number without someone screaming "WHY - I didn't have a problem".

The exclamation point = Next to a podcast: Recent episodes havenʼt been downloaded because you have multiple unplayed episodes.
