Unknown Error 1417

Thanks for the help and paraphrasing the solution inline. My guess is it's the "Disk Access" mode that's not allowing the software to kick the ipod out. Anyhow, worked great for me on Gen2 Nano.

ugh... nevermind, i finally got it to work. I love my Ipod, but apple sure makes it hard to use sometimes! Thanks for the help.

Neither solution is working for me. Same problem--can't update or restore--but I'm getting error #1413, not 1417.

i had this same problem, kept getting error 1417 or 1418 if attempted restore, found the answer on a different discussion. after you open itunes, and your ipod is recognized & it says there's another version would you like to update, go ahead and update. As soon as the ipod looks like it got disconnected & goes back to its main menu screen, press & hold MENU & SELECT buttons on the ipod. the ipod will power down & do some stuff, & should turn back on, then it will allow the update!!

i tried a bunch of things that didn't work, this MENU & SELECT business was quick & worked great!

I too get the error 1413 and you're the first other person i've seen with it. I'm using ipod nano 2nd gen 8GB

I had to turn that autoplay function off. Is yours doing that? That was the problem that I had. I went into My Computer, Right clicked on the iPod icon, clicked properties, selected the Autoplay tab, and for each content type, I clicked select action to take, then chose the take no action.
After I did this, I did the hold the menu and center button down when the iPOd screen disconnected and it finally worked.

Way to go man...thats exactly what i needed to do...autoplay ***** and is what was causing all my problems just like all these other people..nice job
