Unknown Error 1417

Yeah, I'm getting the same problem, and I can't even restore.

The iPod " " could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1417).

I'm also getting the same error message; I've tried restarting, reseting, even restoring the ipod and nothing works. Both the update and the restore options fail each time.

i got the same thing unknown error 1417 i can't even update videos onto it. it says it cant update because my ipod is to old. that bull i just got it last month!

I had exactly the same issue on my Mac Book Pro. I repeatedly got unknown error 1417 if I tried to update and error 1418 when I tried to restore. However I rebooted the Mac and following the reboot the update worked correctly.

I have the same 1417 error. Has any one figured this out yet?

Same issues here but only on one of my 4 iPods. The 60GB Video with SW version 1.1 is the problem case, same error message and tried updating multiple times. The same PC with same iTunes 7 works fine with iPod 40GB (no video), iPod Nano (4GB), havent tried iPod mini yet. It took about 19 cycles of the little flashing update bars to pass on the screen before crapping out each time. Still works fine and was able to syncronize the music if I checked no to update the iPod firmware.

Essentially,
1. Run the update.
2. During the updating process, look at the iPod. As soon as the main menu comes up, disconnect the iPod from the dock or cable.
3. Wait around 6 seconds, and plug the cable back.
4. You should see the pop-up window pause a while, and then it will inform you that the update will complete.
5. On the iPod's screen, it will show an Apple logo screen with a progress bar. Once that finishes, the iPod should be updated.

Try other language than English from Preferences.

Edit-Preferences-General, you see Language.

Change it from English to Japanese and click OK.

Restart the iTunes and you'll get Japanese iTunes.

Try struggle to find the Update button in your iPod Summary panel.

Wait around 60 seconds patiently while massage is saying something in Japanese. No disconnection required. Just wait until everything seems done.

Voila! Your iPod is updated.

Go to Preferences-Language in your Japanese iTunes, and choose English (5th from above). Restart your iTunes and see it's updated.

Or, just continue using iTunes in Japanese, if you find it's cool.
