YSloader.exe and distnoted hogging CPU

When I start Itunes (currently using version 11.3.0.54, 64 bit, Windows), YSLoader.exe (32 bit) starts using ~14-15% CPU (I guess it is maxing out a thread/core?).

The only way to get it to stop hogging CPU is to close Itunes, then kill YSLoader.exe (or distnoted, see below) using Task Manager.

If Itunes is open when I force close YSLoader.exe (32 bit), then another process takes it place as the CPU hog: distnoted (32 bit). This process also sticks around a constant CPU usage of 14-15% until I kill the process.

When I force close distnoted, it's replaced by YSLoader.exe and so the loop continues until I close Itunes.

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall of Itunes using these instructions:

Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

I also tried "netsh winsock reset" - didn't help.

I've tried playing around with different sync settings in Itunes, enabling/disabling wifi sync etc, nothing seems to help. It doesn't matter if my Iphone is connected to the computer or not.

I have tried disabling my antivirus temporarily (Kaspersky) - this made no difference.

So right now I simply have to avoid using Itunes, or at least close it immediately when I'm not using it, which is quite annoying as you can guess.

Using Windows 8.1 64 bit

If anyone knows a solution or have some tips to try, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,

got to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

look for distnoted.exe and right click on it. on the compatibility tab (click change setting for all users if you have that option); then check run this program in compatibility mode for: and select windows 7. also check run this program as an administrator. click apply then ok

This seemed to fix the problem for me....let me know if this helps

This worked for me on Win 8.1 64-bit and Kaspersky Antivirus 2015 (no problems syncing, etc.):

1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

Set compatibility mode for distnoted.exe to Windows XP Service Pack 3

2. Do the same for SyncServer.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support

... and any other iTunes processes if they will hog the CPU (I only had problems with these 2 so far).

Then you aren't using UAC - putting the files in XP compatibility mode prompts if you have UAC on. However, since a subcomponent of a program cannot prompt, the component just doesn't run. I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone turning off UAC just so they can run iTunes properly!

It did not work for me as I reported here last year. At that time, ysloader was causing the problem and was essential to synching. Apparently, it doesn't work that way with the latest version so the fact that these programs never run (I've verified that they don't) when in compatibility mode *appears* to be benign. But it is a little unsettling to know that two programs which normally run aren't running (verify this for yourself with the task list manager).

I had problems with distnoted and syncserver, not YSLoader. They might have changed something in recent iTunes or Windows update. I suggest to try again if you haven't recently. According to Russinovich's Process Monitor, syncserver.exe indeed doesn't do as much as it does without the "fix", it seems to practically just load and exit, but for what I use iTunes for (playing music, syncing music with iPod), I have no problems so far and no CPU hogging.

The proposed "workaround" with changing file settings for distnoted.exe and syncserver.exe is only a partial workaround. As JAta2 already mentioned those changes to distnoted.exe and syncserver.exe will cause that both programs won't run. It's not important to select any specific compatibility settings as long as you change them to "run as administrator" for all users. Since both programs won't run at the next device synchronisation, there won't be any high CPU load. However, this only allows to synchronise music and play-lists. Eventually it may be possible to synchronise with this workaround ebooks, videos, pictures too (I haven't tested it). Definitely this workaround does not allow synchronisation of any Microsoft Outlook item, like contacts, calendar and notes. For those distnoted.exe and syncserver.exe have to run.

In addition for certain situations its also required to apply the same change to MobilDeviceHelper.exe.

Tested on: Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit with Kaspersky Internet Security 15.0.2.361c and iTunes 12.2.0.145.

I still hope Apple will fix this problem - maybe for a Windows 10 update of iTunes.
