QuickTime Problem

I had some problems with my iTunes setup that, basically, reported that the older version of QuickTime could not be removed. I tried removing it myself from the Add / Remove Programs menu and even from REGEDIT. Nothing happens. Now, when I try to reinstall iTunes (not working because QuickTime is being stupid), I always get an error (error code: -3) at the end of my installation. So, now, I have no way to access iTunes or QuickTime and no way to remove QuickTime from my computer. Please help me. With the kind of work I do, I can't afford to go without QuickTime for much longer.

Making some more progress, I've made another step in discovery. It's kind of a long explination, but can someone please post the quicktime.msi file?

sooooo ... are you getting a message mentioning a .msi, then a 1714, then a 1603?

if so give this a try:

Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.

1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).

2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.

3. Open Program Files.

4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.

5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.

6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.

7. Restart your computer.

once we've got all the existing QuickTime scraped away, let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1.3 reinstall.

download and save a copy of the QT 7.1.3 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.

Quicktime 7.1.3 Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention itunes

if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?

(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

Man have I wasted a load on time on itunes/qtime v7.

I have cleaned out the registry of all quicktime references but I ended up in a state where nothing was working.
Installs of any version (standalone) of quicktime did not work (Qtime initialisation error - 2095)

I installed the alternative qtime.
http://www.free-codecs.com/QuickTimeAlternativedownload.htm

This has saved my bacon, but I can only get itunes v6 working - can't move up to v7 (which started the sorry mess)

I did try removing the quicktimeVR.qtx quicktime.qts and installing the standalone 7.1.3.100, with AV switched off but I got the usual "The installed encountered errors...." No error msg number

Looks like I'm stuck on v6 of itunes. One thing for sure is that the amount of material on the internet on blogs means this is a widespread issue. What a mess.

I was getting the same error, went through all the steps mentioned above, still no luck, just getting "cannot remove old version of quicktime" when trying to install standalone 7.1.3

can you give us the precise text of the message(s) you get? there's a few very similar ones, some with different possible treatments than others.

Here's the message i get:

"The older version of quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group"

then the install stops, I get the install finish screen and says to try again later. At this point I dont know what to do, I've removed all files, (that i know of) and registry files, which in another thread was supposed to "cure the problem" with the install of 7.1.3.. I just want to completely remove ALL QT associated files so I can install it clean. Or even the cause of the "cannot remove" message. I've never run into this many problems with removal of software before. Thanks in advance for any help you could throw my way.

I am also having trouble installing QuickTime 7.1.3 using the Stand-alone installer. The error message I am getting is:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resourse that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'QuickTime.msi' in the box below."

The box below says:

Use source:
C:\DOCUME~1\Matt\LOCALS~1\Temp\_is55\

The message occurs when that status dialog reads: "Removing Applications"

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was getting this message: "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group". I ran the Windows Install Clean Up and Removed iTunes & iPod & "7.1". That last one was what QuickTime was listed as. Then I deleted the corresponding folders in Program Files and the two files in System32 and rebooted. After the boot, I installed Quicktime alone without any problems. After that iTunes installed with no problem. Thanks for the help.

"The older version of quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group"

okay, that corresponds to getting a 1714 error message number (at the beginning of the chain of errors) and then a 1603 with the previous versions of the installers. they could be decidedly fiddly in some cases (a .msi/1714/1603 chain, oddly enough, was usually easier to deal with.)

my techniques for dealling with recalcitrant 1714/1603 chains could be quite experimental, so i'd like to try getting a second opinion on this one.

so let's try getting an itunes installer log to the Apple engineers for a look.

1. Open a commnd prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)

2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.

3. Type in a space, then the following line:

/l*v C:\log.txt

4. Hit return.

5. The installer will create a log file:

C:\log.txt

Find that file and send it to this email address Put the URL to this discussion thread into the email, so that the person who gets it has some context … in general, give as much info as you can.

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resourse that is unavailable.

that is corresponding to the 1316 error message that we could get with earlier versions of quicktime. so we'll try what used to work for that.

here's what we'll try first.

Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.

6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.

7. Restart your computer.

does that install goes through okay?

For what is worth: I used the Microsoft cleanup utility (mentioned in an earlier post) to remove the quicktime install files and then renamed the quicktime directory under program files. I was then able to install (and run) the new version of iTunes.

Best of luck to everyone!
