Logic X - Independent MIDI tracks for the same AU plugin

Hi there,

I'm struggling a bit with creating several MIDI tracks that all trigger and share the same AU instance. I know about the multitimbral option but I need the MIDI tracks to be completely independent, ie. volume, pan, inserts etc must be able to be independently assigned. Furthermore all these MIDI tracks have to be on the same MIDI channel.

What I'm looking for is to recreate for Battery the default MIDI setup for a standard Logic Ultrabeat set, e.g. Boutique 909. When I first fired it up I was pleasantly surprised to have it laid out nicely with a main track and 8 individual MIDI "subtracks", one for kick, SD, hats etc. Very cool feature but how do I translate this to Battery? I can't simply switch to Battery on the main track.

Condensing the question, how can I trigger one monotimbral AU instance with several independent MIDI tracks?

Cheers for any hint.

Good luck mate.

I hope this thread will catch the attention of a bright head from Apple. It seems that Logic is somewhat in between the more audio oriented markets, aka Protools (whose MIDI implementation is awful) and the traditionally more MIDI oriented, aka Cubase, Cakewalk (perhaps ?... I haven't used it in a long time).

I've noticed that the younger generation is much quicker to bounce to audio in an early stage of a project than us old schoolers who grew up with pure MIDI DAWs in the 80s. I find it much more reassuring to leave the final choice of sounds and plugins on MIDI tracks to the last minute, and bounce them to audio only right before mixdown. It saves a lot of time when you're able to switch a MIDI track to different plugins on the fly in realtime.

But well... philosophy aside.

A feature Logic was once famous for: "the Midi envoirment"

1. Press +0 (cmd+zero)

2. New -> Multi-Instrument (one object / up to 16 channels) or New -> Instrument (one object / 1 channel)

2b. (optional) If you created the multi, you have to activate the desired channels on it, clicking on the strike thru numbers in the 4X4 matrix. You can always edit it, so start with the least amount of activated tracks required ...

3. Wire the midi object into the audio object of your instrument

4. Close "the Midi envoirment", back to session view

5. Create a new Midi Track

6. Re assign track to Mixer > Multi-Instrument/Instrument (name depends on the property set in the Midi Env) > MIDI channel of choice or "All"

You get all the level of midi control we are used to for ages, individual solo/mute midi level control and more related things.

You don't know Logic if you don't know the "(MIDI) Envoirment", it is essential. There are many tutorials about it, search for user/SFLogicNinja on youtube.
