My Nano is working properly and sounds fine, however it emits a high-pitched whine or buzz that is audible if you hold it close to your ear. Is this normal? I had assumed that a flash player with no moving parts would operate silently.
I have two 2's and a 30 gig. Neither made noises when I first got them. One of the 2's is now making the whirring sound and I have no power, video or sound. I am sending it back to Apple for repairs. None of the IPODs should make noises as have been descibed. I suggest if you still have them under warrenty that you get them checked out.
I have had 2 8GB Nanos. They both have the high-pitched sound.

Why does the sound completly dissapear when it is connected via usb to the computer?
Ah the peaceful silence! Others have mentioned this too...
The first tolerable at first, but seemed to get worse. The second is tolerable, but its brand new.
But again my question, it makes me think there is some other mode the nano is in when its hooked up the computer - a different power condition, actually charging instead of discharging.
I just want one that is silent. Apple engineers fix this please!!!!
I have now had 4 of the new 8gb black nanos, through John Lewis:
1st: Ordered off the net and was a problem. They came and collected the problem nano and gave me a replacement.
2nd: That also made a noise. This time they suggested I get an exchange in the store so I can "find one that works".
3rd: The store attendant gave me another new one, which also made the same noise.
4th: The guy gets me another one, which didn't make a noise as loud and could only hear it when right next to the ear. Although on the train home, I deceided to "play" with it and low and behold it made the same noise. Guess the background noise in the store meant I couldn't hear it properly. Its now been returned to John Lewis again, who are sending me another one.
5th: Being delivered! If that too makes a noise I am just going to get a refund and wait for Apple to admit and fix the issue.
Its not the stores fault, they probably got a dodgy batch. I hope Apply admit the fault as If I have to return the 5th one it is going to look well dodgy!
I bought an 8GB nano form Costco. It emits that high pitch noise when turned on. It's very obvious, and I can hear it even from an arm length. It hurts my ear. If I reset the nano for it to reboot, I can here the high pitch of electronics chirping. Went back to costco, exchanged it, 2nd unit does the same thing. Even worse, 2nd unit has plenty of dust under the LCD already. Both have firmware 1.02 out of the box. Returned it. Bad batch? Extremely poor quality control. I won't buy the nano until Apple can fix this obvious quality control problem. I have countless of personal electronics (PDAs, cellphones, DAPs, even previous iPods) and none of them have ever exhibited this problem. My advise for those of you that want to buy a nano, buy from a place that has a good return policy.
Can anybody that have silent/noisy nano list their out-of the box firmware version? The ones I got and returned are both 1.02.
I would also like to see a firmware report for the different available version to see if anyone is the culprit.

1.0.1 - Need info...
1.0.2 - Emits high pitched noise.
I know that the oldest version 1.0.0 had some bugs that were fixed in later releases. Though I would like to know if this high pitch issue is apparent in all versions. If it is
NOT, then it brings hope that the issue can be fixed with a firmware upgrade.
If it is a hardware problem then it is very discouraging as the only means to be rid of the sound is to have a new unit.
I think I will be returning my 2nd generation 8GB Nano till this issue is resolved. Its
THAT annoying to me.
Does anyone know where one can find the old firmware so that I can get more info? iTunes 7 only likes to get the latest, which doesn't help me at all!
I don't think that it has anything to do with the firmware.
The first 8gb nano i got had version 1.0 on it and made the noise.
The second one had version 1.0.1 on it and made the noise.
The third one also had version 1.0.1 on it and made the noise.
The fourth one also had version 1.0.1 on it and made the noise.
(All these came from the online Apple store).
Also tried upgrading to 1.0.2 but the noise stays. Therefore i believe it's a hardware issue.
The one i got now (4gb nano) i got from a local Apple centre and came with version 1.0 on it and doesn't make the noise 🙂
Just returned my day old iPod nano because of this annoying high pitched whine. Also noticed, like another post-er, that when plugged in via USB the sound went away but when disconnected it started making that high pitch noise again. Very annoying. Hope Apple admits issue otherwise I don't know what I'm going to purchase. I shutter to think about a Zune. =)

I've the 8GB version, serial number starts with 5U63786, bought from Apple Store Italy.
Nevertheless I've already give'em a call to get it back again (I got the first one back for other reasons, like random reboots, freezes and shutdowns), it should be on its way on thursday, 19.
After whining iMac G5 power supply, whining MacBook getting orange, Mighty Mouse that doesn't scroll after ten days of usage, I can safely say that IT'S ENOUGH.
As Apple fan I'll really think twice before buying again something with an apple stuck on it.
I noticed that most response indicate that the 8GB nano is causing this. Is there anyone there who experienced this on the 4GB? And does anyone know if the new red nano has the same problem?
Mine was a 4GB. First one was 1.0.0 from the apple store. Replacement was 1.0.2, and was perfectly quiet. Kinda thought I was crazy on the first one (so did the guy at the Apple Store). I think it's a real crap shoot. If you buy one take it somewhere quiet before you leave the store and turn it on and check it.
Nothing do to. It's still whining. Anyway, tomorrow the new one will be delivered, I really hope it will be PERFECTLY functioning, otherwise I will have to give it back.
Sorry Apple, we're customers, not a mere source of money to push.
