Nano emits high-pitched whine or buzz

My Nano is working properly and sounds fine, however it emits a high-pitched whine or buzz that is audible if you hold it close to your ear. Is this normal? I had assumed that a flash player with no moving parts would operate silently.

Hi everyone

I've not read the backlog so apologies if this has already been mentioned.

I have a Palm Tungsten E that makes a high-pitches whine after half a minute and only stops when it is switched off. I have had one warranty replacement and the problem persists. Palm say it is the screen that is making the noise and they cannot fix it so...

...I'll get me coat...(runs away)

Ok so I bought an 8 gig and noticed it made the high pitched noise and exchanged it for another 8 gig hoping for a silent Nano... No luck...

I returned my second one to the store for my money back. I will not buy one until this is fixed, when it is I will definitely purchase a new one.

Apple please do something about this... Honestly I don't care about a 40 percent brighter screen or the 24 hour battery life; I will be willing to sacrifice some of that for a silent Nano!

i have the same frustrating problem. its not overly loud but it can certainly be heard in a silent room. I rang up customer support & they told me to go back to the store to get a replacement. So today I went back and got a new one. At the store I opened the new one and to my shock it also had the same problem. The store says they cannot keep opening new iPods for me to check, so I don't know what to do at this stage. Perhaps I will get my money back and wait for a few months; hopefully the engineers at Apple will have solved this problem by then.

Hi,
I just bought a 4G and it was whining.......returned it to Costco for exchange, all others tested were also whining!
I decided to keep this one and exchange it in a month or so.
Meanwhile, I read these posts, tried the update of firmware, and YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! It worked!!!!!!!
No more whine!!!!!
I would advise everyone to try the update before exchanging.
Worked like a charm!!!
Thanks to all who posted 🙂
Much appreciated!

I finally bought a blue 4GB nano yesterday and it makes this noise. It isn't really noticable unless you put the iPod close to your ear. However, I am returning it today to get my money back. I'm not putting up with a iPod that hasn't been made properly. I might wait until this problem is fixed, or just get another type of iPod.

Apple has really disappointed a lot of customers with this issue.
