Nano emits high-pitched whine or buzz

My Nano is working properly and sounds fine, however it emits a high-pitched whine or buzz that is audible if you hold it close to your ear. Is this normal? I had assumed that a flash player with no moving parts would operate silently.

My second generation nano (2gig ) does it too.

Mine is silent while connected to the the computer, but when you disconnect it the whine starts. This makes me suspect it's related to running off the battery. It doesn't stop when the screen backlight goes off. A case with a little sound deadening foam or felt probably would take care of it, but it's surprising and somewhat annoying that it whines.

I just want to add that when I realized my spanking new black 8Gb, 2nd gen Nano emitted a high-pitched noise I immediately called the Apple support staff, who actually told me that they were aware of the problem and that the engineers were trying to identify the source of the noise. I sure hope they find it.

They agreed to send me a new iPod right away. I keep my fingers crossed that the new one is from a different batch and that it doesn't sound like an old CRT-screen when turned on.

OK heres my nano story,

My nano screen cracked (under no pressure at all, but thats another topic). After the screen was cracked, it was still working fine (but no screen), and i was using a belkin battery pack ive been using for many months before.
Now, about a week after the screen broke, i tried to turn it on, and then thats when the buzzing noise started. When i turned it on, it did not turn on, but the buzzing noise started, and when i plug it in to my usb, it buzzes away. As soon as i unplug it its gone.

So, i took it to an apple store after being told over the phone that cracked screens are covered under warranty and they gave me a case # and said that an apple store would issue me a new unit,
so anyway i went to an apple store and they said that although my nano was a victim of bad lcd they couldnt replace it because there was this little dent in the very bottom that was purely cosmetic, not affecting performace at all.

The dent is so so so so small that i asked a staff member at the apple store to feel it to see if there was a dent,
she said she felt no dent, i asked another staff, again he didnt feel a dent, i knew the dent was there but it was so small that 2 staff didnt notice.

i was so mad.

I knew that they wouldnt take a 13 year old seriously......

but im going to go back in there and hope i get a different guy (((i have a well planned fit that i will use if they give me any crap))

but really thats like saying you cant get a replcement because its scratched ((then the whole world would be screwed on that one))

Im really not impressed with the nano either,

you can get an rca lyra for the same price,

only rca s 1gb model boasts 680 songs, picture and video playback, fm tuner, fm record, and voice recording.

To do that with a nano would cost some serious cash.

Any suggestion on what i should do about my nano problem??

I have a Black 8GB and a Silver 4GB and they are both pretty quiet. However, when compared to each other, the 8GB nano makes slightly more noise than the silver. The silver makes no noise whatsoever. Perhaps there is something wrong with the 8GB memory or some other component used in 8GB nanos as most of this problem occurs on the 8GB model...

Hmm...

I belive it's from the battery as well. I'm not sure what to think of it. When i first heard it three things came to mind. Capacitators, battery, or LCD. It seems to happen even if the backlight is off, so you can take out the LCD more or less. So the two left are battery and capacitor. I'm not sure what to do about this. I bought it for my girlfriend and ordered it online. I don't want to wait weeks to get it back either. I hope they figure it out, and it's not a big deal. Unfortunitally, I don't think this is going to be the case.

It's a 4GB 2nd Gen nano for the record....

I went to the Fifth Ave Apple store last night and the guys there had never seen the high-pitched whine/buzz problem. Even better for me, I barely had to argue my case for a replacement because my 8gb nano also had the fortune of being blessed with the white-screen bootup problem (also in this forum somewhere), and he couldn't fix that either. I was presented with two options: 1) swap for a new black nano in the store, or 2) call apple tech support (800-275-2273) and get an engraved replacement. My current, broken unit is engraved, so I chose the latter.

I just got off the phone with tech support. Apple engineers are apparently "very aware" of the high-pitched whine issue, and customer service was more than happy to exchange my humming unit for a new, engraved one. They're sending me a box so that I can ship back my defective unit, and I should received a new one 10 to 12 days after that.

It's always a pain when these issues arise, but such is the price of being an early-adopter. Apple seems to be handling this problem nicely, but regardless, I recommend you guys address this issue asap. Hope this helps.

Now I am worried that I can't return it. My mother wanted the packaging because she liked the box and I gave it to her before she went home to New York.
Now I get the e-mail from Apple saying that I have to send the nano back in it's original package with all contents.
This is really starting to make me wish I never got the new one.
