Nano emits high-pitched whine or buzz

I got my 4gb nano 2nd generation yesterday and I noticed the buzzing as well.
It's not very loud the only you can hear it is if you put your ear up to the back you can't hear it from the front i hope theres nothing really wrong with it

And she said come to bed

Got a 2GB Nano today from apple.com. It is emitting the high pitched sound. It is so high pitched that it gives me a headache unless I'm listening to music (and can't hear the high pitched sound).

On the phone now (on hold) to try and resolve the problem. I'll let everyone know the outcome.

After 2 hours on hold (seriously), I got through to a friendly rep who, after some troubleshooting, made arrangements for an exchange. Unfortunatly, he - nor anyone he consulted - were familiar with the problem. I was hoping to hear "oh yeah, we know about this. We'll send you another."

All this leads me to suspect that the replacement could have the same problem. We'll see.

If it helps any I actually had this problem with my first generation nano and after awhile of use it went away eventually : )

My iPod nano 8 GB also makes this high-pitched noise. I called apple, and they are sending me a new one. =)

Same here. I contacted apple and after an hour or so of being on hold etc - they're picking my old one up and shipping me a new one (even though I have engraved on it).

Wonder what will happen with my "buzzing" nano - I wouldnt mind buying it back seeing as it's a "minor" defect.

Oh well - Only sucky part will be waiting a week to get the replacement without an ipod 😟.

My 8GB nano does this too, but i can only hear it when i put my ear to the back of it. Not that big of a problem really since the alternative would be 10-12 days without the nano. Unless they send me a new one and asks me to send the old one back with the carrier when the new one arrives.

The carrier will come and pick up my old buzzing one in a cuple of days, so 'til then I'll have two nanos 😀

iPod nano 8GB Windows XP

I just bought an 8GB Nano and this issue with the whine is happening. Two of my friends have a 4GB and 8GB 2nd Generation Nano and its happening for them as well.

I'm now returning my 8GB and thinking of getting a 1st Gen Nano 4GB. Another friend has the 1st Gen White 4GB and comparing it with the 2nd Gen, its silent.

I had a problem with a Sharp GX30 phone screen in that it would emit a high pitched noise. This was noted by Sharp but was a minor issue to them and it could not be solved. The reason they gave me was to achieve a higher brightness their was more gain and power going through the screen. It also happens on my Motorola V3x as well.

Therefore with 2nd Gen Nano increased brightness causes more gain on screen causing this noise.

Hopefully the engineers will be able to fix it!.

Ambassadeur does that mean your new one doesn't buzz as much?

Don't know if it helps any, but for those that can figure this stuff out. If I press on the center button (Hard) and on the back of the nano, then the sound stops. (as soon as you let go, it is back).
It is almost like the case is not tight enough to muffle the sound.

Yep - I have noticed the exact same thing... Does seem like a design flaw of some sort..

Has anyone had two different 2nd gen nanos and had one not make the buzzing?

Will this "harm" the iPod? I am actually thinking about just keeping it and dealing with the whine. But don't want to if it is going to some how effect the iPod.
