How can I stop iTunes from launching when I disconnect my Bluetooth device?

This has only become a problem recently. Whenever I disconnect -- not connect, disconnect -- my Bluetooth Bose SoundLink Mini speaker from my MacBook Pro iTunes will auto-launch. I am current with Mavericks and iTunes updates. There must be a configuration switch that can be tweaked to prevent this from occurring.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there anyone who is a MacBook Pro "expert" who understands what the interactions are between the Bluetooth driver and app software and iTunes, and can speak with authority on what might be going on here?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

I am having the same exact problem... I bought the Bose Sounlink Mini a few months ago, and the problem is annoying and also freaky! I often watch a movie using the speakers before bed, then when the soundlink disconnects later, it starts blasting music from my laptop when I am asleep and scares the **** out of me and a few times woken up my boyfriend and others as well... Happened too many times now. Searching for a solution! My netflix also seems to start automatically playing when I am out of the room as well regarding this issue - not sure if it is related though. Let me know if anyone finds a solution to this!

I have the same problem with my Bose Soundlink Mini bluetooth speaker and I may have found a solution. I can't believe no one has tried this or thought about it, but instead of turning the bluetooth speaker entirely off, first DISCONNECT the bluetooth from your mac by simply clicking the bluetooth button on the bluetooth speaker and making it discoverable. Again, that has worked for my Bose Soundlink Mini, hopefully it would work for the rest of bluetooth speakers.

I too get this issue. The noted behaviour I've found when my Bose Soundlink Mini 2 is disconnected from bluetooth:

- If the iTunes app is open and has content paused > content will resume

- If the iTunes app is open and has no content queued > random content will play

- If the iTunes app is closed > iTunes opens

It seems as though disconnecting the BSM2 has the exact same outcomes as pressing the play action. Sadly disabling the RCD is not a compromise I'm really willing to make. This should be fixed.

Yes, it definitely should be fixed. But I fear it's a minor issue only affecting users of Bluetooth speakers and we're probably not the majority. Meaning it likely isn't high on Apple's agenda for a fix. Although hopefully somebody at Apple has seen this thread and the issue won't go unnoticed.

Disabling iTunes is a terrible short-term fix, mostly because I actually want to still use iTunes and this 'fix' disables it entirely.

Have the same issue. Thought someone had broken into the house as a movie from my iTunes library started with my whole family asleep on the upper floor of our house. Surprisingly scary situation to wake up because of loud aggressive voices from downstairs in the middle of the night!

This is my first Mac (MacBook Pro, Yosemite, Bose Soundlink Mobile Speaker II) and I'm not convinced so far. This bug, causing me wake up every time I forget to shut down bluetooth link before I go to bed is basically not ok.

(I also have to restart Spotify after sleep mode quite often to be able to get the sound to the speakers. Don't know if that is related too to the bluetooth handling?)

The solution here (relevant portion copied below) stopped the autolaunch, but this solution disables iTunes (using OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite), so many users may not wish to try it. I am using Bose Soundlink Mobile II speakers and an Amazon Echo, both of which experienced this problem. If you do not use iTunes this may be useful. If you do use this solution, you may want to keep a record of the old file names so you can reenable iTunes in the future.

"In Finder go to Applications and show package contents on iTunes.app. Inside the MacOS folder there is a unix script called iTunes, I renamed it iTunesclosed. Also renamed ituneshelper.app to ituneshelpdisabled.app" h/t Nikoloco.
