iTunes 11.3.1 stops working when opened in 'Podcasts' view

After the latest update installed in last few days on Windows 7, iTunes often crashes on startup, at about the time it is accessing iTunes store (fine before the update). It does not happen if iTunes is opened in 'Music' view, but changing then to the 'Podcasts' view and clicking the podcast 'refresh' button causes crash again. It is worse on some user accounts than others.

Have tried:

- Complete reinstallation of iTunes

- Deleting preferences files in the Local and Roaming directories.

- Copying a QT dll to the iTunes program files directory (as mentioned on another thread)

- The other suggestions in this link iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

Any ideas?

That's just a work around.

My Problem is not crashing but that iTunes get unresponsive for several minutes.

For an example. If I download a few podcast from a feed manually when the files are downloaded and iTunes is about to save them to the drive iTunes just stop responding for like 5 minutes or more. The same happens when I refresh a feed. And yes I use list mode.

I now went back to 11.2.2.3 and no issues.

It's harder to go back much further since iTunes changed files at some point and the older versions can't read the new files.

11.1 had its problems and still we have problems in 11.3. iTunes continues to freeze. Apple is silent. List view with podcasts does not work, it will cause a crash every time. "My Podcasts" view is clunkier, can't get album artwork anyway (which seems to be half of the point of this view) and cannot be sorted except manually. Because God forbid they should enable alphabetic sorting of podcasts.

One month of an unusable product. RIDICULOUS.

That's pretty much what I found when upgrading to 11.3.1 which is why I went back to 11.2 but 11.3.2 seems to be the best of the bunch in my opinion. Tried going back to 11.1 which didn't have the feed/save features but it wouldn't recognised the modified itl.

It seems the problem is high latency in the routines that handle feed episodes in the list view. There's also bugs in how played episodes are deleted willy-nilly. Explicitly saving episodes seems to dodge that crappy code.

I can see where Apple are coming from. They are trying to do a bit of housekeeping on local files and leverage on cloud storage but I would rather keep all downloaded episodes forever as some of the podcasts that I subscribe to only offer recent episodes and delete older ones.

Oh, and it's much worse than that. Both 11.3 and 11.3.1 are trashed when it comes to podcasts in other ways also. If in list mode you manually download an episode on any podcast it causes all podcast episodes to disappear in the list for all podcasts! Does the same thing in a filtered search. Only way to get it back is go to music and then back to podcasts. And of course if you are looking at a filtered list you lose the filter.

So, I have rolled back to 11.2 and all is well. I'm not moving from that until I see they *really* have it fixed for sure.

It amazes me that they could release something that has such obvious bugs.

Sheesh.

Just rolled back to 11.2 and it does in fact work fine... so far. Decided to ditch 11.3.2 after it started crashing when refreshing in list view. Had to try several times before it succeeded. Like rwstarkey, I think I'll stick with 11.2 until something better comes along.

It's a pity Apple have really botched the pleasure of podcasting. If there was a descent alternative I would be tempted to ditch iTunes all together. Have been with it for version 8 way back in 2008. Trialed several. Tried hard to go with Windows Media Player but iTunes won out.

Seems a lot of publishers have gone to iTunes too. Apple have really let a lot of people down in releasing half-baked software. The person responsible needs to be dealt with very severely.

I've been having the same issue - for the most part, I don't need to run iTunes, since I download new podcasts and app updates on my phone, but the fact that it was happening bothered me, so I started googling it.

Thanks to 2 suggestions above, I got it to stop crashing!

First, I launched iTunes in safe-mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3430) , then switched the podcast view from List to Unplayed. Then I quit iTunes, and relaunched it, and it didn't crash! Yay!

Now if I can figure out why iTunes doesn't sync with my phone half the time.....
