Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

iTunes number of files is incorrect?

The number of files displayed in my iTunes window is 451 and no duplicates.
The number of files in iTunes Media is 679, many are duplicates
Why this discrepency ?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), Maverick man

tt2 mentioned the command "Show Exact Duplicates"
What is the difference to "Show Duplicates" ?

Show Duplicates includes every track with the same combination of Name & Artist, which can occur if you have multiple albums by the same artist with some overlapping tracks (say an original album and a Greatest Hits) that I wouldn't normally consider as duplicates to be thinned out.

Show Exact Duplicates matches on the same combination of Name, Artist, Album, Disc # & Track #. This is more likely to represent the set of tracks that want to be thinned out and would typically arise because the same album had been ripped from CD twice, or the same set of tracks imported from a folder located outside the iTunes Media folder.

Both methods rely on files being tagged consistently. In either case the duplicates could be in different file formats, for example an album could be ripped in both .mp3 and Apple Lossless. They should also find any duplicates that contain the same binary content, which are the kinds of duplicates that would be found by other file-based utilities.

Highlighting duplicates within iTunes is relatively easy. Use the built in option Show Exact Duplicates, sort by name, reveal the kind/size columns in case you want to choose the "best" (for your needs) version of each group to keep, then use Command+Click to select all but one of each repeating group. Delete when you have a screenful of selected tracks, and repeat until done. For the quantities involved in this thread (228) there is no need to look to another tool for the task, assuming there is no requirement to amalgamate play counts, playlist membership, ratings etc. or any need to worry about multiple entries in the library that point to the same physical files.

Just look att Doug's Apple Scripts for iTune.

If iTunes was such a good program, there would be no need for scripts

By the way: I tried a Doug script Music Folder Files Not Added

It is a dmg file and thus not script. But I followed instructions to place it in an iTunes Script folder

Of course, it does not work
But Doug wants nevertheless a donation.

Perhaps you failed to follow the installation instructions properly. Check the instructions again at http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=musicfolderfilesnotadded2

What you download from the site is a .zip, containing a .dmg, containing a .scpt file. The object that you install is a script. Install it correctly and it will work correctly.

Given your earlier posts in this thread the script has no work to do.

Chris, do you really mean it ? (that iTunes is no good)

No, but you do.

I enjoy iTunes! It is very simple to use and I easily manage all my music & movies with no problems...

I say that iTunes is crap.

Good for you. Why do you use it?

I painstakingly am trying to enlighten this community.

Why?

Besides, you have already enlightened us. We know that you do not understand or know how to use simple and easy to use software.

We get it.

and we can all happily use iTunes so why try to "enlighten us" that it doesn't do what we want, when it does?

I had a long thread with stubborn opponents like CSound, but I could not convince him.

Nothing to convince him of (or should I write he is already convinced... 😉)

After 6 months (with allies) trying (and failing) to teach Bomi how to use an email account I need no further enlightenment.

  • Dead Links - operator error, don't move files after connecting them to the library.
  • Duplicates - operator error, don't add the same media more than once.
  • Missing Files - operator error (same as Dead Links).
  • Names confusion - operator error - let iTunes rename files as you edit tags and the file name and path will reflect the tag details.
  • Supported file types. See Media formats supported by QuickTime Player. iTunes will play most of these natively whether or not QuickTime is installed. For any that it won't install QuickTime if applicable. If you have media in a format that still isn't supported then find a product that supports it and use that, or convert it to a more widely supported format.
  • Genius. If your music is properly tagged and not totally obscure then the Genius feature should be able to do something with it.
  • Why should searching be saved? - unjustified expectation.
  • Search works. If you can't find what you're expecting to find then chances are you've entered too much, too little, or hidden too many fields in the Songs view. Search works with visible fields. Click the magnifying glass in the search box and experiment with the options. Search entire library determines whether the results are returned in an overlay pane (on) or by filtering content in the main display (off - my preferred option).
