Aperture

I have acquired a new iMac and wish to install Aperture (which I have already purchased) on my new machine. When I go to the App Store the only option is Buy and it doesn't appear in my list of purchases. I don't want to pay for it twice, what is happening? Can I add it to my new Mac just by copying the .app file from one machine to the other or is it more complicated than that?

Aperture should show up showing saying either Installed or Install in the MAS if Aperture has been purchased by the Apple ID you are logged into the MAS with. If it does not it indicates a problem and you need to contact Apple to fix it.

Just to be clear if you login to the MAS from the system that has Aperture installed on it does it show up in the Purchased list then? Are you certain you are going to the same MAS from both systems, As you mention the prince in pounds I assume you are using the UK store? Are you sure you are log gin into the UK store from the second machine.

If all that checks out then you need to contact Apple, good luck

It's strange. On the machine it was originally installed on, if I go to the App Store and put Aperture in the search box it comes up and offers me an update but it still does not appear in my list of purchases when I look at my account. I could use Migration Assistant but then I would have to migrate all my apps and I don't really want to do that. Could I just copy the .app file across? Would that work?

When Mavericks came out all users that had Aperture installed that was not purchased from the MAS were given the opportunity to switch to the MAS version. Once the switch was made Aperture would show up in the purchase list just as if it was purchased from the MAS. At that potent you could then go to your other machines and install Aperture.

So to me it sounds like the original Aperture you have was not from the MAS, perhaps you bought the electronic version from the Apple Site. If this is the case and you do the upgrade on the original machine Aperture should then show up in your purchase list and then you will be able to install it for no further charge on the new machine.

If that is not the case and you are positive you bought the original from the MAS and not the Apple Site you will need to contact Apple so they can determine why it is not showing up in your purchase list.

As for copying Aperture over to the new machine, until you get the licensing worked out there is a good chance this will not work. If the original Aperture you have required a serial number t will not run on the new machine without it and if it was from the MAS not having it show in the purchases list indicates a problem.

I did wonder about whether I'd bought it outside the Apple Store, I can't remember but it's a possibility. Anyway, I accepted the update on my old machine but nothing has changed unfortunately.

Are you perhaps confusing the Apple Store with the App Store? Previously you could download an Aperture Trial version and buy a registration key from the Apple Store to unlock the trial. Then you do not have an App Store licence.

Which update? Are you now running Aperture 3.5.1? If yes, check again your "Purchased" tab and look for an "Accept" button.

My previous post should have said outside the App Store, sorry. I am running 3.4.5 on Mountain Lion on my old machine. When I go to the App Store and key in 'Aperture' in the search box it comes up and the purchase bar says 'Update'. If I accept this it then asks me if I want to download an older version because "The current version requires OS X 10.9 or later, but you can download the last compatible version." The fact it offers me a download seems to me to imply that it recognises that I've purchased it but nowhere does it appear in my Purchases list on either machine. If I do the same process on the new iMac it just shows the 'Buy' button with the price on it. I suppose I could migrate all my apps and delete the ones I don't want on the new machine but it's a messy way of doing it and I wanted to be a bit selective on my clean install of Mavericks because when I upgraded to Mavericks on the old machine it ran very slow so I reverted to Mountain Lion from a SuperDuper clone.

Since you are running still Aperture 3.4.5 and your current Aperture version has not been bought from the App Store, you will see it on the updates page, but not on the purchased page. Only the update to 3.5.1 will convert your serial-number license key to an AppStore license and show Aperture among your Purchases.

To be able to update Aperture to 3.5.1, consider to upgrade your old machine to Mavericks. Once you see Aperture 3.5.1 in the Accept part of the Purchases tab, it should show on your new Mac as well.

Alternately: Do you still have the downloaded installer? Then copy the serial number from the "About" panel on your old Mac. "Aperture > About Aperture".

If you do not have the installer, copy the Aperture application over and try, if it will launch. Enter the serial number. Then update it to 3.5.1. and accept it.

OK Leonie, the saga continues! I had upgraded my old machine to Mavericks but had problems with the OS so reverted to Mountain Lion. I have a clone of the old Mavericks installation so I selected that as my startup disk and checked the App Store for update as per your first suggestion. On checking the App Store, the button says 'Installed'. I checked the version of Aperture running on this disk and it is 3.5.1. It still does not appear in my purchases, even in this configuration. Weird!

I will try your second suggestion. When you say copy the Aperture application over, do you mean just the .app file or everything associated with Aperture?

Follow Frank's advice and let Apple sort this out. Even if you should get Aperture to run on your new machine, you will never be able to install it properly or update it, if it does not appear in your "Purchased" tab.
