Google Reverted to Old Layout

Earlier today (8/28/2014), Google, my homepage, reverted back to the old layout. Images attached to show you what I mean. All I remember doing was logging in to my computer from it being in a state of sleep. I would like to go back to the new layout.

I have tried:

  • restarting computer
  • quit and re-open safari
  • reset safari
  • checking other browsers (firefox is fine; don't have other browsers on my computer; no one else in my house/network is having this trouble)
  • research (google search, google forums, apple forums)

Other people are having similar trouble. See link: https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/chrome/EVLc3z5pcB8/lliYVZwiZesJ. Unfortunately, they are using a different browser and no one has an answer for my particular issue.

Any suggestions?

Ah man, this ***** so hard. I have the exact same problem and this version of Google is just useless and ugly. They didn't have to keep updating the Google server for Safari, they just had to keep it the way it was. I think Safari is a fine browser (I even think it's the best) and I really don't want to switch to Firefox 😟. I really hope they'll find a solution for this, perhaps Apple will make an update for the Safari-users... Fingers crossed!

The Devel fix works, as previously posted, just for the session and it doesn't matter if you are letting google cookies get saved or not. There also appears to be no plist file for Safari labeled as such. 10.6.8 / 5.1.10

Here's a quick workaround. Create a rtf file with TextEdit containing the string: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0

and save it to the desktop. When you need it you can copy and paste it in quickly.

I know this isn't much of a contribution, but I needed to update my Apple PW so I could contribute/follow this thread and at least weigh in as to what worked/didn't work for me. MacBookPro 2.33 GHz

Google just ****** me off but I will not let them dictate what browser(s) I use.

Looking to go to Lion soon and wondering if the newer Safari is effected by this? Lion is as far as my MBPro will go, but I've hesitated because with only 3 GB or RAM that already seems to be consumed by Safari/Safari Cache (or any browser), I am wondering whether or not to do it. For a long while I didn't because I didn't want to lose Rosetta for Quicken 2006, but Intuit has an updated version of '06 that will run in LIon. They also have a brand new version just out, but I don't know about it's backward compatibility.

oh boy...

it appears this is a deliberate move and nothing to do with a hack or anything else... I feel google have been heavy handed in this...

'Google flushes out users of old browsers by serving up CLUNKY, AGED version of search'

'Ad giant: Yeah, we did that deliberately'

In a separate thread, as spotted by a Reg reader who brought this sorry affair to our attention, user MadFranko008 was able to show that even modern browsers - including the current version of Chrome - were apparently spitting out glitches on Apple Mac computers.

Google then appeared to have resolved the search "bug" spotted in Chrome.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/08/31/google_search_browser_support/
and on the BBC website...

Google 'discourages' users of old browsers Google has started showing old versions of its search page to people using out-of-date versions of some web browsers.

The problem was most pronounced among those using variants of Safari 5.1 and Opera 12.

A Google message posted to the forum said the change was made to "encourage" people to upgrade their browser

yup, this is exactly the same issue. i get the same results for google image searches now.

i'm a designer as well, and do google image searches all the time. so this is a real drag.

the quick work-around was in a previous comment:

go up to top nav, to Develop>User Agent>Internet Explorer 9.0 (or choose one that displays the Google images page the way you need it, that's the one that worked for me, others used Safari for iPad).

unfortunately this will only work in the current session in the existing window or tab you have open. you'll need to do this again for each new window or session you open up.

or, use just Firefox or other browser instead of Safari.

Hi. I posted a temporary solution to work around this GOOGLE problem, by going to -develop -and checking -internet explorer 9.0.- The search issues look "solved", it works like the newest version we were used to, BUT when I click on the image to go to the web page... it's not working anymore. It doesn't take me to the page source of the image. It just freezes to show a blank page. Anybody having the same problem? Search Ok, but going to pages 0! HELP!

Same here. Google and Google images has evolved back into a stone age interface. Reminds me of dial up and aol and crap like that. As if it's not enough to have to listen to all the iPhone 6 bashing right now. I'll always use Apple, but I believe they need make a few leaps n bounds to be the cutting edge company I fell in love with. Screw Google and the rest...

This is not an immediate solution, but try going to the feedback button on the Google website way at the bottom of their page and ask them if they'd be kind enough to include a link with the basic and standard versions of their website, for the Safari browser, like they've included for all the other browsers. I'm having the same problem and absolutely detest the basic version of Google. I'm off to send them some feedback on this issue. I TRULY wish companies wouldn't fix what ain't broke! -Ella

Same thing happening to me. Google images reverted to old basic version in Safari. Images are working properly in Firefox and other browsers. In Firefox at the bottom of the page it has a link to "Switch to basic version" so I would think there would be a link at the bottom of the Safari page saying "switch to standard version" but there isn't. This happened without me changing any settings. Clearing cache, resetting Safari does nothing. Very frustrating!

This is not an immediate fix-it and solution, but what I would recommend is going to the bottom of Google's website page and giving them feedback and asking them to put in a link for Basic and Standard version of Google, on the Safari browser, like they have on all the other browsers. Apparently, they overlooked the Safari browser and forgot to add this link. -Ella

Some are having these problems, but not all. I've contacted persons using OS X 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.10 who report no issues on a laptop.

Safari searches on my 6.1.3 iPhone 4s DO turn violet afterwards, as expected. iPhone Safari image search appears as expected, not reverted to old style.

When I go to Gmail using Safari on my iMac and open a link, it flickers like a loose light bulb or like an old TV set that Archie Bunker would pound with his fist. This does NOT happen when I use Chrome, which is not my default browser, yet.👿

This experience is repeatable, consistent, duplicatable, not a fluke. Is Apple paying attention? It seems they have been served notice.
