MBP Retina Scratched Coating

I was cleaning my 15" MBP Retina today using a cloth that came with it and noticed that some of the coating on the black outer border was coming off. At first it looked like smudges until I went back over it and noticed it was coming off and getting larger. Anyone hear of or had this issue? Is it ok? Cleaning it before so everything was ok, but the problem appeared only now. I bought my MBP less than a year ago 😟

I would not give up on this issue. Take it to a different store if possible. If not get a different genius and ask for the manager. You are not alone. By all means be polite but persistent .

Apple has had some issue with Retina screens, including class action lawsuits for an earlier ghosting problem.

you can determine more about your screen in terminal, including manufacturer:

ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

I Have the exact same problem! Seeing mixed responses on whether Apple will repair or not, mine is no longer under warrantee so doubt anything will be done. Completely agree with the above comments, there is clearly a problem with manufacture of the screen as it seems to be happening to an awful lot of people! Considering how much these things cost, this shouldn't be happening and if it does Apple SHOULD fix it!

Nobody has suggested a remedy so far nor the cost being quoted for a repair/replacement of the screen. This seems to have become a deal breaker as far as buying another Macbook at least so far as I am concerned- and this is my fourth Macbook i.e. first the white, then the aluminium(late 2008), then the MBA(mid 2011) and last the MBP Retina(late 2013). I was very happy with the first three. The MBP makes me annoyed every time I open it and look at the screen. I have virtually stopped doing even basic cleaning for fear of further deterioration. No remedy seems to be in sight.

Same issue, not as bad as some of the MBP users above but same model of Macbook Pro, only cleaned with the dry microfibre cloth included with the Mac, I feel as this is such a widespread issue, Apple do need to offer some kind of compensation or repair. It is obviously the coating they used on the Macbook Pro bezel and with such an expensive product we deserve a little more than a bezel that comes off with a soft microfibre cloth!User uploaded file

This is looks interesting but there is nothing definite about it. Can anyone throw some light on how the Apple Service is responding to this issue now ? It may also be Country specific. How is an user expected to convince the Service People who do not have a clue about this rumoured "secret" programme of Apple. Also why should Apple do it in such a mysterious way?

If the information is true then Apple should treat it equally worldwide and make it easy for users to get the screen replacement done conveniently.
