I am having the exact same problem - I have a keynote presentation that is 3 years old. It has had the same 4 video snippets embedded in it since that time. They are all Quicktime, and play in 'editing' mode. They used to play just fine the last two years. Now they don't work. I made sure that the "start movie on click" box in Inspector was not ticked. I tried looping it. I tried turning off any transitions between slides. I tried deleting and reimporting them. Nothing works. The movie plays for about half a second then stops, and immediately transitions to the next slide without being told to. Does anyone know a solution to fix this?!?! I'm running out of time until this year's presentation!

Also, Keynote is weird. It only lets you transition OUT of a slide and not INTO a slide. So the transition into the video slide is actually on the previous slide as a transition out.

The ONLY reason I now use Keynote is because I do a lot of slides on my iPad. Otherwise I would use Power point for the simple reason it allows you to transition into and out of a slide or sequence instead of just out like keynote.

A transition is an effect between two slides, in other words the effect merges two images together, the effect does not just appear on the outgoing or the incoming slide.

In Keynote, the transition is applied to the outgoing slide (slide 1 in a two slide sequence), PowerPoint uses the incoming slide, some applications apply the transition on an effects layer and not on a slide at all. The point is that the end result is exactly the same; a presentation created in Keynote with a left to right wipe between two slides will play in PowerPoint with a left to right wipe between two slides.

Actually in PPT the transistion is applied to the slide -either incoming or outgoing, your choice- AND can be applied to each element on the slide -grouped together in any way you choose or individually and you can have multiple transitions incoming and outgoing per element.

So no, its not the same at all. PPT is much more flexible. To only allow a user to transition at the outgoing point of a slide is like using a manual slide viewer. Why use a computer at all if you that all you can do. (ok, Im being overly dramatic on that one) The point I am making is I like keynote and wish I could use it but except for basic presentation it just does not have the flexibility to create or play advanced presentations with multiple effects and timing.

That said, this thread is about trying to get a video to play on a keynote slide. Apple still has not fixed this bug and in my experience probably wont. The only work-around I have found is to delete any transitions into the slide with the video on it.

No it is not, it is applied to the incoming slide, slide 2 in a 2 slide sequence.

If a transition in applied to the wrong side of the transition, it will appear on the slide before.

Please refer to the Keynote Help, part 6, Transitions.

can be applied to each element on the slide -cgrouped together in any way you choose or individually and you can have multiple transitions incoming and outgoing per element.

No, what your explaining here is an Animation. You have confused transitions with animations.

An animation is an effect on an object on a slide.

A transition is an effect between 2 slides.

you can have multiple transitions incoming and outgoing per element.

No you can't, only one transition can be applied to a slide, again what your describing is an Animation.

except for basic presentation it just does not have the flexibility to create or play advanced presentations with multiple effects and timing.

You obviously have not discovered or used Builds and the Build Inspector. I have many presentation with over 20 objects on a slide, each with a set of incoming a builds, separate outgoing builds, each with individual automatic timing.

Please refer to Keynote help, part 6, Animating Objects.

I have no issues with Playing compatible video files in Keynote, neither has the vast majority of users who use video in thier presentations. I urge you to learn the correct terminology and the working methods in Keynote from the Help system.

properly coded video files will not play in keynote if there is a transition or a build on the slide.

Im sure your having an problems with this, but this is not normal for Keynote. I have no difficulty setting up and playing back any video file in Keynote; examples are DV, Prorez, H264, and MP4.

Try resetting Keynote; perform all the steps in the order listed:

  1. To remove Keynote, you must use an application removal tool for this procedure to work: Appcleaner is free, I use Appzapper
  2. Empty the trash
  3. Shut Down the Mac (Apple menu > Shut Down)
  4. Wait 10 seconds, then press the power button
  5. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key,
release the Shift key when you see the grey Apple screen
start up will take a few minutes longer than usual as the Mac is performing a software repair
  6. Restart the Mac normally, (don’t hold down any keys during startup)
  7. Install Keynote from the Mac App Store using the Apple ID you previously used to install Keynote

Without wishing to necrobump this thread, I have also experienced exactly this problem.

It turned out I had accidentally applied a transition to the slide the video was on with "Start Transition" set to "Automatic".

This was hard to spot as my videos are always the full size of the slide and I haven't found a way of viewing the slide transition without reducing the video size slightly. Then I can click the slide behind the video and see what transition I may have inadvertently applied.

The result was as described previously - the video plays briefly then either stops or jumps to the next slide.

My advice to anyone with this problem is to check that you haven't applied an "Automatic" transition to the slide with the video on!

Some videos in the keynote does not play when in presentation mode, what should I do?
