The scam website you encountered is very common and can be created by anyone in minutes. If you were to call that telephone number they would gleefully accept credit card payment in whatever amount they can convince you to spend, for the answer that you just got on this site for free. That assumes they know what they're doing, which isn't guaranteed.

A greater threat is that during the phone conversation, they convince you to install a remote access tool (a/k/a RAT - TeamViewer is an example of one) that would enable them to log in to your computer remotely for whatever nefarious purpose that may entail. Clearly you didn't do that.

We just got this on our iMac today 4/11/15, and went to start a chat, nobody home, called 1800MYAPPLE, nobody home, then went to support boards, and found this answer! Did the trick.

If APPLE, INC. ever finds out who the heck does this sort of thing the should have them drawn and quartered, real slowly.

If I wouldn't have gone to apple support boards, I would still be frozen. :-) Thanks NEIL for the answer!

I am having the exact same issue-- I tried holding down the Shift key when restarting Safari, as well as clearing my website data, but I'm still getting these pop up security ads! I'm starting to get nervous... should I take my computer to the Apple store? This problem doesn't seem to be going away and now I'm actually concerned that my privacy could be seriously compromised.
