Yes I have done exactly that, see original post.

My solution was to disconnect from the internet, launch Safari, now the offending web page could not load and lock up Safari. Then the Safari/Prefences would load and now that part of John's instructions worked. Everything is now cleared and Safari appears to be working OK.
