IPod classic gone now

What are those of us who just want a high capacity mp3 players supposed to do now that the iPod Classic is gone? Apple has pretty much alienated those of us who just want a high capacity mp3 player.

I'm not really concerned about availability now. I'm concerned about the way that apple went about discontinuing a viable product, just to replace it with an iphone or ipad that costs up to 3 times as much as an ipod classic. It left a huge void in the apple production line for those people who just want a large capacity mp3 player who doesn't want apps.

Oh well Mr Fiend, go and complain to Apple, lets see if they care about you being upset as much as they care about me being upset at their decision to withdraw the Classic at 1 seconds notice.....

What do you suppose happened there then?

This really is the most ridiculous conversation.

  • You say that Apple told you there were no iPod Classics available. If you think they took into account - and checked with - every single store of every single supplier of iPods, you're mistaken. It's far more likely that what they almost certainly meant (or in fact told you) was that they (Apple) had none left or that they (Apple) were not able to supply you. Different thing altogether.
  • Rather than moan about the withdrawal of the Classic, I looked for - and found - several outlets that were offering them after Apple's formal withdrawal. The fact that I'm the only one in this thread that found them doesn't mean that they weren't there. It means that I didn't spend useless time moaning about it.
  • The fact that there appears to be none left now isn't my fault. You know what they say - don't shoot the messenger.

Just to clarify my frustration Mr Fiend :

1 - Not true - yes, Apple did trawl their stock to tell me that they had none, but I also personally trawled every on line retailer that I could think of as soon as I saw the Classic was discontinued, and at least one if not more, physical example of EVERY High St retailer I could think of including but limited to (Argos/JS/Asda/Currys PC World/actual Apple stores/Game/John Lewis plus on line outlets) and do you know something interesting, Apple store at Bluewater told me that someone went in the day they were discontinued and bought every one they had!!! Its almost beyond the realms of reality that there were any for sale anywhere within days or even hours of the discontinuation....even in the little backwater known as Cobham

2 - FYI, I initially came on here to try and actually locate one, as well as try to get the message out there - and you know what, the only one single person who has defended Apple (ie YOU) seems to miraculously find them for sale in his/her local store - AMAZING!!

Bye

At Last!! At least there is some sort of explanation behind this situation!! :

"During the Q&A portion of his interview at the WSJ.D conference tonight, Tim Cook was asked about the iPod classic, which was finally discontinued last month five years after its last update.

Cook said Apple primarily stopped making the device because it was no longer possible to source the necessary parts from anywhere in the world. Apple does not have plans to reintroduce the iPod classic due to a shrinking audience and the engineering costs that would be needed for a new version, but Cook pointed towards the iPod touch, which has almost the same amount of storage space, as a viable option.

Observers had speculated Apple was waiting for a 128 GB iPod touch before discontinuing the iPod classic, but while the iPhone and iPad have gained 128 GB options, the iPod touch has yet to do so. Still, with Apple unable to source parts for the iPod classic, the company was left with no choice but to end sales of the descendent of the original iPod.

The iPod classic's 1.8-inch hard drives were typically supplied by Toshiba, with the last generation using a 160 GB drive. Toshiba launched a 220 GB version in early 2011 that gave some hope the iPod classic might receive an update, but one never came to pass and Toshiba has long since discontinued its entire line of 1.8-inch hard drives."

Why didn't they say that in the first place, may have helped to explain this frustrating situation!! Although one wonders why a company the size of Apple cant make a suitable alternative.....!?

Seriously, I think we are all beating a dead horse here. As much as I was PO by the decision I don't think there's anything that's going to change matters. I think we need to vote with our fee,t or rather dollars, and check out the alternatives, Pono being the best one I can see. I'm old enough to see fads come and go. The cloud is another fad, And streaming music is convenient for people who consume pop music in a way similar to listening to the radio. For those of us who listen to music differently or I might say "Think Different" , you know the crazy ones like me, we will have to seek out possibly more expensive alternatives. A Mac laptop in and of itself is a more expensive alternative to a PC. Yet, people don't seem mind to pay more for something better. If a high definition audio player is more expensive and has more storage, and has better sound quality, I'm going to pay for it.

I do agree - and nothing is going to change for the relatively few (but potentially millions of users worldwide) who want their device to the things that the Classic still does really well - I just pray mine will last a good few years until a viable alternative pops up or at least hopefully enough used ones out there that can be bought to replace it when the sad day comes! I'm still annoyed though!

Really, really upset and disappointed. I love my ipod classic. Now I see no point to continue buying music from Apple Itunes Store. Time to look at other brands that keep the customer in first place not last. It seems Apple only cares about what is best for them and not what the millions of customers think. Having an Ipod touch is not the same and I will never buy one. I like music not playing with apps. Little by little I am running away from all apple products. I hope many other customers start doing the same. I have an iphone now, but when this one gets old my next one will be android, that is for sure, the same thing for the Ipad I have. I see no reason to keep buying Apple in the future. They already have more money than they can dream of, so we the customers are not that important anymore. Sad.

I gather from this discussion that itunes will no longer support the ipod classic, of which I own one as well.

There is an option. Winamp is a music/video playing program that will recognize your ipod. You can use winamp to create playlists on your ipod and move songs from your computer to those playlists (although that crashes sometimes.) You can also recreate your media library in winamp, with playlists, and then you can simply send the playlist to your ipod and all the music will go with it. Just right-click the playlist and you will see the option. (I don't think that has ever crashed.) I have never used itunes.

Now there's a problem: winamp changed ownership and there isn't much of a staff working on it these days. You can find their discussion forums easily, register, and find out where to download it, if you want to use it. I pointed out to them that the discontinuing of Apple support for the classic was a big opportunity for them but they seem nervous about legal questions. (You can read what they said on the forum.)

Now this brings me to the immediate problem I am having which is absolutely bizarre. I have one song, an mp3 file, on a playlist in my ipod, and the ipod won't play it. What is really bizarre is that I can hook the ipod up to my computer, open winamp, find the song in the ipod playist, click it, and winamp plays it off the ipod through the computer just fine. But when I disconnect the ipod, find the song, and click it, it sits there for 5-10 seconds without starting and then goes to another song on the playlist. Any ideas? Thanks.

Then this discussion has misinformed you.

iTunes does still support the Classic, I use it with my Classic several times a week, without any issues.

Despite the negativity in this thread, the Classic is recognised by iTunes, iTunes will Sync with the Classic and every operation that has been possible between iTunes and the Classic is still possible. Not only that, but Apple continue to provide this forum, which is the same user-to-user support and help for the Classic. Since support for the Classic has always been via this forum, which continues, then the level of support has not changed either.

Two things have changed.

  1. The Classic is no longer manufactured, or sold by Apple
  2. iTunes interface has changed yet again, not necessarily for the better.

As one example of the weird things that iTunes now does; if you open up the revised Get Info for a song, using the new interface, the OK and Cancel buttons have swapped places.

and previous Get Info - iTunes 11:

Ignoring the change to the visual appearance for a moment, why would anyone think it was a good idea to swap the positions of the two specific buttons? That would be comparable to General Motors moving the steering wheel to the other side of the car.

Like other experienced contributors here, I too have issues with iTunes. But the point of this forum is to provide help to others - not to be a whingers corner. The only thing that all the whinging does is clutter up the discussions and reduce the ability of anyone to find the help they're seeking.

Try playing it in iTunes? What happens?
