IPod classic gone now

What are those of us who just want a high capacity mp3 players supposed to do now that the iPod Classic is gone? Apple has pretty much alienated those of us who just want a high capacity mp3 player.

Sorry, I don't dare let Itunes touch my ipod.

Especially now!

Why not?

So rather than let software that has been designed to work with the iPod manage your iPod, you'd prefer to use a third-party programme that was designed to work with something else entirely. I think you're letting some external force cloud your judgement.

Do you mean in itunes, on my computer?

Yes, of course.

iTunes - the programme - is designed to manage your iPod. If you've never used it, how do you know it it's "so bad"? Plenty of people find it perfectly suitable for use with an iPod Classic (me for one).

iTunes - the store - isn't relevant to this discussion.

If you've used another programme to manage your iPod, you've simply introduced another factor into the equation that might be causing the problem - i.e. that maybe - just maybe, Winamp has put a corrupted version of the song onto your iPod. And the reason I suggested playing the song in iTunes is, if iTunes will not play the file, then why should the iPod?

  • I can't stress this enough - neither Apple nor iTunes have discontinued support for the iPod Classic, nor has iTunes stopped working with the iPod Classic.
  • iTunes can fully manage an iPod Classic and it can create Playlists and copy them to an iPod Classic. I've yet to find an programme that can create Smart Playlists, as iTunes can.
  • Far too many people would rather rubbish everything Apple, even though they have invested their own money into buying an Apple product, than learn how to use iTunes.
  • If you listen to those who insist on rubbishing iTunes, all you will do is cause yourself problems.

As for your MP3 problem: where did you get the file?

Did you rip it from a CD (in which case, rip it again, preferably using iTunes), did you buy it as an MP3 from a digital store (in which case, see if you can download it again - after trying it in iTunes first ), or did you get it from somewhere else (in which case, you may need to make a judgement on how good a source that MP3 was).

There's no need to make a federal case about it, but since you ask, I had already been using Winamp on my computer and organizing music with it for years when I got my ipod. I immediately discovered that I could use Winamp to move everything over to it, and that's what I did. There were no problems. Now I have itunes on my computer, but I've never used it much and I don't have a library set up in it. So,if I were ever to open up itunes with my ipod hooked into my computer, I believe the first thing that would happen would be that itunes would "sync" it, and since my music isn't in an itunes library, the ipod would be completely wiped out. So that's why I don't want to use it.

This particular song was downloaded from youtube and converted to mp3, something I've done dozens of times. I suppose I may as well try your suggestion. . . .yes, itunes plays it just fine. But so does winamp on the computer, and winamp on the computer will even play the song off the ipod, as I said. But the ipod itself will not play it. Very strange. I've tried deleting it and re-transferring it, but the problem persists.

😕 You are joking, right?

This whole thread is about "making a federal case about it" - and you joined it.

Perhaps it has suffered from a conversion error.

By "federal case" I was referring to your distress that I didn't want to use Itunes.

Now I freely admit I'm here because I need help, and that I don't know what's going on with that song. But I do understand something about the logic of troubleshooting. If it was a file conversion error,. it would seem that the error would cause trouble when I played the song on my computer on itunes, as you suggested, or when I played the song from my hard drive with Winamp, or when I played it through my computer with Winamp from the copy on my ipod. But it doesn't, All of those work fine. It seems to be the relationship of the ipod itself to the file on its drive that causes the problem.

Not necessarily. The iPod is not as powerful as a fully fledged computer, so any minor error may well be dealt with by any or all programmes on a computer but still not playable on an iPod.

If the file had not played in iTunes, that would make it clear that there was an issue with the song. However, we haven't proved (or established) that to be the case, but I stand by my suggestion that the file itself is corrupted in some way that the iPod doesn't like. These things happen.

So I suggest that you start again with your original source and see if that sorts out the issue. Alternatively, is the song available as an MP3 in a store, such as the iTunes Store or Amazon? After all, one song isn't that expensive and despite anything anyone claims to the contrary, "downloading the song from YouTube" isn't legal.

I had my iPod classic for 8 years and I lost it two days ago. I've never been more sad about an object in my whole life and it's so typical that I'm just too late to get another one. I need an iPod that can actually fit my music collection on it. The 16GB iPod just doesn't cut it. I wish they could bring it back. I miss mine. If I'd have known it was going to be discontinued beforehand I would have got a replacement in advance! 😟

Unfortunately, those who had a large collection of music and needed a high capacity I pod was not considered when the decision to discontinue was made. There are many who wish not to pay excessive amounts for money for one in case theirs dies. They probably are not going to guarantee the old one. I have only heard of horrible customer service or good customer service stories in that respect, it is a 50/50 chance and that is being kind. This will give many an excuse to not buy any more apple products. I am currently weighing my options as we speak and am leaning towards other options other than apple for my large music collection.

I agree. It was a very sad day for me when I saw that the Ipod Classic is no more. I break it every 3 years. What will I replace it with?

I checked out Neil Young's PONO -- but it is $400 and only holds 64GB. However, you can increase its capacity to 128GB if you insert memory cards. This seems like a poor replacement for my $250 180GB Ipod.

Haven't checked in on this discussion for a while. Apple if you're listening I'm giving you a free million dollar winner advertising idea. Wait like two more years then bring back the iPod Classic with a bigger hard drive (note to self...spend more time looking for parts during two year wait) and call it the...wait for it...iPod "Classic" Classic or c2. Just like with Coke and New Coke we got the birth of Classic Coke. Just steal from Coca Cola Apple. You're way more creative anyway with your ads. Have fun with it! You're welcome. My fee you ask? How about a brand new shiny 8th generation iPod Classic Classic for the holidays 2017:)

This news makes me sooo sad! I loved my iPod classic 160GB. The hard drive is dead/damaged. I was hoping to get a new one, and then I hear the news about this. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned. Maybe fate is trying to say to me "Get with the times! Get an iPhone!" But, I seriously don't want an iPhone. I have a cell phone (an old designed one), which I'm fine with. Are MP3 players going to become a thing of the past and forgotten? 😟
