Who's arguing about it? The fact remains Apple sells "device only" iPhones in the USA which come unlocked. If they do something different in Japan, it's not of much concern to virtually everyone here.

This really depends on what you think about device only phones. I can go into the Apple store right now and purchase a brand new AT&T phone for full price without doing anything to my contract, which would be considered a device only, but it will definitely not be unlocked. While Apple will begin selling unlocked phones in the near future, historically 1-2 months after launch, right now there isn't anything that is not connected with a carrier. The Verizon phone has the GSM side unlocked from a prior FCC ruling, and the other carriers will sell phones without contracts, but they are not considered unlocked.

No need to think about whether it has a SIM card or not as anyone can remove the card at any time and put a different one in. In fact, it's better to have a card included so you don't have to pay the usual $10 to get one from the carrier.

Instead, the real question is whether the phone is locked. All VZW iPhone 6's bought at full price from a US Apple Store are unlocked. My wife bought a VZW iP6 last week and is using Cricket (ATT subsidiary) service on it right now with no issues.

As for the Sprint model with the peculiar LTE and China-specific bands... I can't say for sure if it's locked or not from Apple but some believe it is. If so, it's the only model where this would be true.

I just bought a full price Verizon iphone 6 straight from apple and it is unlocked, meaning I can snap an att sim card in it and use it right away. Same as ATT, you can use T-Mobile sim card, no problem. And of coz all "device only" or even contract phone at full price are unlocked oversea.

I don't think an ordinary tech guy would have exposure to that kind of information. It is not relevant or important for most American anyway (who do not have the need to travel oversea often or need to have a working iphone oversea). Hence, when people asking this kind of question in this forum, not getting a straight answer is expected. But then, why quite a few of high level experts here be so certain about full price iPhone not being unlocked or locked to carrier? I mean, why not just not answer or tell them such info not available in this forum. Why mislead apple consumer on purpose? I don't get it.

I completely agree with you, maybe the truth is, they are not really experts at all, and just like to make believe like they know. There were two clowns that were "experts" that were arguing with me or basically telling me that my sister's story was made up. It is a proven fact that all verizon iphones are unlocked because of the FCC ruling. I have sprint, when my sister bought her iphone 5s from verizon, I put my sim card in it, and it worked perfectly fine with the lte and everything, then my sister put a tmobile sim and it also worked perfectly fine. And these level 6 and 7, arguing with me telling me that it isn't true. At first I was just like you, thinking why do they mislead people and then I started thinking, they probably don't know what they are talking about and want to impose their beliefs on people, when the truth is, they don't know.

Flat out Wrong! ALL Sprint phones are locked, regardless of whether you pay full price. Only Sprint can unlock them, if you meet their criteria. ALL Verizon phones have an unlocked SIM section, regardless if you DIDN'T pay full price (by legal agreement for Verizon to get use of certain LTE bands)/

No one is misleading you, learn to read.

ALL iPhones purchased at Full Price ( device only ) from Apple is unlocked regardless of carrier

That is absolutely false.

I just bought a full price Verizon iphone 6 straight from apple and it is unlocked

The only reason that's true is because Verizon is PROHIBITED BY LAW from selling new LTE capable devices that are GSM locked. That is NOT the case with any other carrier in the US.

I had exactly the same thing. I wanted to buy the iPhone 6 model A1586 for use in europe. What you need to do is: Go to a apple store and ask them for the iPhone 6 sprint model for the full price. You will get the iPhone without a contract, simcart unlocked and just for the normal price. The iPhone 6 sprint models are all A1586. I did the same and it worked perfectly.
