Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

I upgraded to iTunes 11.4 today, and now I'm not able to sync my iPhone 5s. The sync button is greyed out. I tried reinstalling, reauthorizing, signing in again in iTunes and my iPhone. I also restored my phone twice...not sure what else to do. I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on an iMac Intel Core Duo. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've been pulling my hair out over this ever since I bought my iPhone 6 and very happy to find this thread because what most of you are talking about is my exact problem. It seems a lot of people are having problems/other issues too so it's been so confusing trying all these different solutions to no avail, but clearly this is finally the problem defined!

I'm on an iMac, Intel Core Duo, 10.6.8. Can't sync or back up my new phone or my months old iPad Mini either since I downloaded the latest version of iTunes.

I'm willing to try what you say to do this evening 6plus55. I really hope it works. I want only an official iTunes fix from Apple, I can't really figure out all the other work around steps at this point and not sure that it will actually work with the iP6 anyway after all the trouble. I have never even had to get on the phone with apple support in since I started using Apple products in 2006 and thought I was finally going to have to give in but maybe they've already fixed it.

Hate to get off topic but are any of you old 32 bit folks able to use iCloud with your machines/devices? I've never put much effort into figuring it out because I always back up USB to iTunes but if I can have everything fully functioning it might be of some benefit. I will go see if I can find some threads but you all seem really smart right here so I thought I would throw that question out if anyone is inclined to respond to that off topic.

Keep posting any fixes you guys have, thanks so much for the explanations and effort you all have been putting in here!

"I'm on an iMac, Intel Core Duo, 10.6.8."

I hate to make a meta comment but I am really astonished by how many people in this thread are still running 2006-vintage, 32-bit only machines 😮

I mean, I still have a 2006 17" MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Core Duo lying around but the battery is dead and it's turned off.

Not to say that a 64-bit only kext issue causing you all heartburn should be the sole cause for upgrading your computer, but geez ... do you realize how slow they are?

Anyway, as I've stated before, AppleCare and Apple Engineering are on the case, this must be more complex than it first appears given that they still haven't fixed it yet ... I told the AppleCare person I was corresponding with that my feedback for Apple Engineering was that they need to provide an Uninstaller with the iTunes .dmg download version ...

(Look on the bright side, at least we're not iPhone 6/6+ owners with bent phones running iOS 8.0.1 with no cellular service or working Touch ID 😁 )

haha....well that is why we are all here after all eh? I don't use my computer for that much tbh, most of my internet goofing is on my phone or iPad. I have a pretty giant itunes library that I still buy and upload CDs to and manage playlists, apps, etc. A new disc drive is the only thing I've ever had to replace on my old iMac. I often use it for quicker emailing or research on products where it's easier to have lots of windows open at once. I'm using it right now just to figure out my problems. 🙂 I'm not a designer, artist, or gamer and I don't use the computer for business so upgrading a working computer is far off my list of purchases. That being said, when I buy a new computer it will not be a laptop, I have never been able to get used to the keyboard and trackpad stuff at all. I'll buy a new computer basically when Apple makes it impossible for me to do the things that I need it to do. If they would have made a statement that the iP6 was going to be incompatible with anyone running 10.6.8, I would have waited to buy both a new iMac and phone at the same time, it's not like I don't know that time is coming but I really thought I could get 10 years out of this machine that's always served my purpose well. I just hope that I can scrap together some normal functionality with bug fixes to iTunes or I'll have to start saving up some cash for a nice Christmas gift to myself!

This is way off-topic for the thread, but since it's been broached....

I guess it depends what you use the Mac for. If I were a commercial studio rendering videos, I'd certainly want the latest fastest. But for myself, at home, my 2006 32-bit 1.6 Ghz Mini w/ 2GB RAM still works fine. Why change? It'd just be wasteful to upgrade. I do wonder how any home-use application can be slow on what is essentially a supercomputer on the desktop. What the heck is it DOing when it's slow??? (Granted, I'm a programmer from the days of megahertz processors, and memory specs were prefixed with "K", not "G".)

I've been an Apple user for over 20 years, but it's getting hard to see the advantage to paying the Apple premium, and then dealing with their attitude re: planned obsolescence.

(Sort of) back to topic - if 11.4 doesn't work on 32-bit machines, then Software Update shouldn't have offered it.

Thanks to everybody who got some of us running again!

Sep 24, 2014 7:55 PM in response to cwa2

Thank you @cwa2 for your help! It's working again. I had posted a question last night about the difference I found in deleting files to uninstall iTunes 11.4 - specifically that instead of this file - /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/MobileDevices.bun dle I only found /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/ and wondered if deleting it would yield the desired results or might be deleting something additional that could cause problems. I decided to go ahead and put the application and all the files you listed in the trash but not delete them in case I needed to go back to the dysfunctional state of things before trying this.

Then I found a disk image of iTunes 11.3.1 and reinstalled it. As far as I can tell, it seems to be working fine now. We can sync things again and so far it seems all is working as before. SO A BIG THANK YOU, cwa2 and everyone else who was trying to help sort this out. Hopefully Apple will actually get this fixed and we'll be able to reinstall 11.4 at some point.

I'd still like to know if there was anything dicey about deleting that bundle if you know...

Meanwhile, we're just grateful for the support and insights!

"Is that your version of "Let them eat cake", or do you work for an Apple retailer...? "

Neither. But Apple really drew a Maginot Line in the sand with the introduction of the Core 2 Duo and the era of 64-bit machines.

I hate Apple's planned obsolescence policy behavior as much as the rest of us (remember, I still run 10.6.8 Snow Leopard as well as a lot of you guys - Best OS Evar!); but in this particular case I don't think it's all that much to ask of people to have bought a 64-bit capable machine sometime in the last 8 years.

I took a quick look in /Applications and I see a couple of dozen apps that I have which are already 64-bit only. Now, maybe when they were originally installed some of them were crafty enough to install binaries that matched (only) the architecture of the machine, and they would install 32-bit versions if that were detected; but I'd be surprised if they were that 'smart'. The 64-bit only handwriting is on the wall ...

This seems to have been resolved for me now. I had all the problems mentioned in this thread, and reading Ed-sg's post, I deleted iTunes 11.4 ( actually using Clean My Mac ) and then reinstalled, and now syncing works just fine.

The ITunes version and build was exactly the same 11.4 (18) so can we assume from this that nothing has been changed in the software ? Very odd.

Sep 25, 2014 3:23 AM in response to 6plus55

I was about to try reinstalling iTunes 11.4, but I first read the "Read Before You Install" document. It states

iTunes requirements

Hardware:

  • Mac computer with an Intel processor
  • To play 720p HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras, a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor is required
  • To play 1080p HD video, a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor and 2GB of RAM is required

Our Mac has a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor (not a Core 2 Duo). So, is it safe to assume that iTunes 11.4 should not have installed as an "updated software is available for your computer" option from Apple and that we have to revert to an earlier version because our computer lacks the proper processor for 11.4 to work?

Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.
