Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

I upgraded to iTunes 11.4 today, and now I'm not able to sync my iPhone 5s. The sync button is greyed out. I tried reinstalling, reauthorizing, signing in again in iTunes and my iPhone. I also restored my phone twice...not sure what else to do. I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on an iMac Intel Core Duo. Thanks in advance for your help.

I believe that you left out the word, "Preferences" in #5, but otherwise this is good:

I was just working with Apple Tech Support and my issue was resolved without uninstalling anything. I have a MacBook Pro with OS X and an iPhone 5s with iOS 8. Here are the steps he had me complete to get my phone syncing again:

In iTunes, click File

Click Library

Click Organize Library

Check “Reorganize files in the folder “iTunes Media”” and click Ok

Click iTunes, Preferences, Select Advanced, and Reset.

Click Ok.

Close iTunes and Re-sync device.

Good luck!

I've been struggling with this since the delivery of my iPhone 6 at the weekend. IOS 8 devices require iTunes 11.4, so my iTunes on my Mac (2006 white MacBook Core Duo with Snow Leopard), was updated to 11.4. Now, I'm unable to sync the iPhone 6 to any of my music on the Mac, including either manually, by drag and drop or by sync methods. What's more, neither my 60GB iPod, iPad Air and iPhone 5S (both on IOS7), show the same problems-unable to sync music, either manually or by sync.

I have spent 2 hours on the phone to Apple Support this evening, very helpful guys who tried lots of things by remote access on my Mac, and yep, they were stumped too. They are, like me, confident the issue lies with iTunes version and not any of my devices, but from a diagnostic point of view, it was helpful for them that I have 3 devices on different IOS versions all displaying the same issues.

I am continuing with a call back tomorrow evening with Apple Support and I will post any outcomes on here.

Very frustrating, I need iTunes 11.4 to use my iPhone 6 with it, but not only has that not worked at all, it has alienated my original iPod and my two IOS 7 devices. And nowhere have I read that 'Snow Leopard will not work with 11.4 version' Watch this space...

We seem to be in the same situation as everyone else here. There was some kind of update from Apple a few weeks ago that came with an error message and ever since we have been unable to sync our iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5, or iPad mini 2 with retina to iTunes (but they backup to the Cloud okay); and they show only "other" as content in iTunes 11.4. We have a desktop Mac running 10.6.8 and an Intel Core Duo processor. Our devices are currently running iOS 8. Our computer has been giving us a trouble for several months (e.g., several daily freezes, the screen suddenly turning black or green, odd patches of colored lines showing up on the screen, to name just a few), so we've been talking about getting a new one. If we do get a new Mac, does anyone know if we will be able to transfer our current iTunes 11.4 files and library over to it and have everything work okay?

Apple specifically says that Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.8) is supported by iTunes 11.4, and requires only an Intel Core process. This means that the 64-bit-only kernel extension they shipped with iTunes 11.4 does not meet their own compatibility requirements and needs to be fixed. Hopefully they will do that.

However, they could also just update those requirements to indicate that a 64-bit processor (Core 2 or better) is required, retroactively making the current 11.4 install match the requirements.

iTunes Sync is disabled, so works for neither my iPhone5 nor iPad. I'm running a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6.8), both the iPhone & iPad have iOS 8.0, iTunes is version 11.4 then 11.3.1 (in an attempt to return to a configuration that worked previously). The iTunes Sync button is grayed out/dimmed, & it lists only "other" as content on my iPxxx. Under Summary, iTunes correctly identifies my iPxxx. Under Info, iTunes correctly lists my Mail accounts. Under Apps, iTunes recognizes & replicates the iPxxx screens & knows how many apps I have on them. Both iPxxx devices work fine.

All attempts at sync'ing fail (automatically sync when connected, sync over Wi-Fi, ...), as the Apply button gives way to the grayed out Sync button.

Uninstalling & reinstalling iTunes from 11.4 to 11.3.1 (including removal of apparent specific 11.4 files such that 11.3.1 wouldn't be polluted) is to no avail.

The first signs of the problem came after an automatic Apple software update for iTunes that was followed by the following error message:

System extension cannot be used

The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

Needless to say, searching for a way to re-download AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext was futile.

Given the number of people reporting the same problem, this looks rather like an Apple bug, probably in iTunes. It would be advised that they get hopping to fix it, & publicize the fix rapidly on their website & these communities.

if you guys haven't already, get on the phone with apple support. we need to make as much noise about this as possible. I feel it's very unlikely that apple would make us old Mac users a priority otherwise.

Even 64 bit macs are having a lot of problems with this version of iTunes. I agree with the above sentiment that apples software releases or updates have been slipping the last few years. They need to up the quality control big time.

I had my second input from Apple Support this evening. They are aware of the issue with 11.4 and Snow Leopard, amongst others, and are currently working on a fix, according to the helpful chap on the phone tonight. Through remote sharing on my MacBook tonight, a file similar to the 'Hijack This' program was deployed and system data captured. It has been sent to those currently working on a fix to this mess.

The support guy was very keen to try and capture as much information about the problems people are experiencing and urged anyone having these issues to get on the phone to them. The more data they have, the more comprehensive any solution may be.

I'm hoping to speak with him again at the weekend and I hope there is some some more info available by then.

hey guys just got off the phone and solved my problem. i have a 6+ and my mac is a core duo macbook from 2006 on snow leopard.

this is what i did:

download and install a clean copy of 11.4 directly from itunes.com (even if its already installed, run the installer again). i suspect the one off the website is "fixed" vs the one that downloads through itunes or the software update program.

click the following link to empty your syncing cache. following the instructions for your operating system

restart itunes and voila!

OS X: Resetting Sync Services

hope this works for you guys!

I was having a similar problem. Ipod and phone would appear, but couldn't sync or drag files to either. Tried a lot of things, but what ended up working was re-installing the OS from my installation disc, then updating software from the Apple menu drop down list. Seems that itunes 11.4 corrupted some extensions that needed replacing. Only way I found to do this easily. Everything working fine now.

Sep 24, 2014 4:20 PM in response to Ksanti

I wrote about this and came up with a fix a couple days afterward and posted everything in a fairly logical manner here:

Repeated "AirTrafficHost" errors in console after 11.4 update; CPU spikes

As others have mentioned, this is an issue with 32-bit Macs. If you follow the advice in my thread you will be able to sync over USB with an iOS 8 device running 11.4 but not wireless. It's pretty insane that an update hasn't been issued yet.

Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.
