Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

I upgraded to iTunes 11.4 today, and now I'm not able to sync my iPhone 5s. The sync button is greyed out. I tried reinstalling, reauthorizing, signing in again in iTunes and my iPhone. I also restored my phone twice...not sure what else to do. I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on an iMac Intel Core Duo. Thanks in advance for your help.

hi cwa2, thanks for the cool way you found to restore eberything back to normal and i'm glad it worked for everyone, but alas myself: i tried your way and now my macbook pro seems to be broken 😟 i have a 2006 macbook pro, 15" intel core duo, runs with snow leopard. I couldn't find the "/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/LIbrary/MobileDevices.b undle anywhere (not even my mac found it, not even with the Go to function) so i went ahead and deleted all the other suggested parts. I was REALLY careful just to repeat your steps and double checked every file.

What happened after: First, my dock disappeared, my mac uses at least double the time to work tasks, then safari kicked the bucket (somehow deleted from programs - nowhere to be found) i still had the itunes 11.3.1 version in my downloads, so i tried to start this, but it gave me an error note that it couldn't install.

i work with time machine and tried to import the "before-ground-zero" version, but my mac wouldn't even let me start in "recovery mode" (command + R)... i seriously need your help - how do i import my "good" back-up before the 11.4 itunes update?! thanks a lot - turning to you since you really seem to know your way around our machines.....

hallelujah, i fixed my mac and sync works again! so hi Jeff Ree, i'm trying to exactly describe what i have done, so that you soon can work and sync with your mac again - i know it drove me mad!

do you have a pre-itunes 11.4 back-up? this is quite essential, since if you have the same issue as i had, you should have all the undamaged files somewhere up your sleeve, before you follow cwa2's steps.

or perhaps check if you have the "/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/MobileDevices.b undle". this was what i didn't have on my machine anymore and it seems that this was what messed my mac up.

if you have this file, carefully follow cwa2's instructions (you can find those in his post in this thread from Sep 13, 2014 10:50 PM (top of second page). if you have completed all those steps, and your mac acts normally, try to install the former itunes version 11.3.1 (http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/download-review/1957301/apple-itunes-for-mac-1110)

if your mac looks a little crooked like mine (dock disappeared, safari disappeared, tasks took ages, some of the system fonts changed - especially time and date and battery display in the upper right hand corner) then you need your pre-itunes 11.4 back-up.

what you do now is, to replace all the files you deleted from cwa2's description with the ones from your back-up - you can literally copy and paste the files from your time machine back into the according folder. i also took the itunes icon from the back-up applications folder and copied that into my current applications folder on the hard disk(as well as the missing safari).

once i completed all the replacing - lo and behold - my dock came back, tasks went smoothly, and the fonts changed to normal again!

i verified that i had itunes 11.3.1 in my applications folder on my hard disk and opened itunes. the sync button wasn't greyed out anymore and i could sync all my stuff, just as before!

unfortunately, the apple support advised me to restore my ipad and even reset it to factory setting - which i did, and certainly shouldn't have! so it took me about the whole night to sync all my music and videos back.. but everything worked and is as before!

i really hope you didn't have that much a hassle...

Yep, it would seem 10.6.8 snow leopard and iTunes 11.4 don't play well together.

People get paid a fortune to make sure this doesn't happen but still consumers are left out in the cold when we have a problem. I see there is an option to downgrade to 11.3 but this involves messin with my iTunes library folder which i don't like doing because I have a fear I'll loose everything.

So, I can only assume apple planned this, forcing users to upgrade their OS, handsets or even laptops to retain the same level of functionality.

"Yep, it would seem 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and iTunes 11.4 don't play well together."

I think the answer to that is "It depends".

I am on 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.4 works just fine once I removed the broken AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext and reinstalled from the downloaded 11.4 .dmg.

But I am on a 64-bit 2010 Mac Pro. People with 32-bit-only machines are, sadly, hosed.

cwa2, thanks for your detailed post on how to remove the offending items. I removed iTunes, removed the listed files, installed the earlier version of iTunes, and now can sync iPad, no problem. Hardware is 2 GHz Intel Core Duo in iMac - maybe six or seven years old. Maybe Apple's not very subtle way to force people into an upgrade.

I'm in the same boat. Can't sync/back up my iPad 2 or iPhone 4, & the bar shows all "Other". Also said my iPhone was over capacity, which it isn't. We have the very first iMac with the Intel chip, which is 1 revision too early to update past OS 10.6.8. Apple specs for iTunes 11.4 say it's still compatible with OS 10.6.8. Glad to see it's not just me! Hoping Apple fixes this ASAP. I don't feel comfortable backing up to iCloud.

Has anyone contacted APPLE directly to report this issue? With the many people here reporting this to the forum I would suggest that each person call apple directly and report the issue. A work-around is not acceptable. A band-aid won't do. APPLE needs to fix this and they will only respond if they are aware of how many of us are having this problem.

Today I spent 2 hours trying to get help on their support CHAT only to be forwarded to several different "Specialists" none of them solved this.

I simply ran out of time to spend on this today.

CALL: apple service center: 1-800-275-2273

and report your case. get a ticket number so you can follow-up with them.

Lets get this fixed.
