This is the reply I JUST got from fitbit

We sincerely apologize for your frustration in this matter, and regret that we do not have answers to all of your questions.

Although Fitbit is constantly seeking ways to improve and integrate with third party partners, we don't have plans to integrate with HealthKit at this time. We have passed your feedback on to our Customer Support leadership team.

Our previous customer advocate referred you to the Community forum so that you have the opportunity to provide feedback. Developers working for Fitbit are constantly mining the Community forums looking for new ideas, and seeing what our customers are interested in. Adding your feedback there is the best way to make your interests in integration with HealthKit heard.

If you are still interested, share your ideas about HealthKit integration with us in our Community: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Feature-Requests/Integrate-with-iOS-8-Health-App /idi-p/319432.

We appreciate your time and the feedback you've provided.
Sincerely,

I can't see why they can't. Fitbit have a shared API which other apps are able to use. If you have to open their app to read the API in, it becomes part of their app. Which if they then write the ability for that to be shared with Healthkit, then I can't see how they could be stopped / prevented. Unless Fitbit remove API access, which I cannot start to think they will.

I guess this may be the reason...

This is what I found on the "Social Media" page on Fitbit's site. https://www.fitbit.com/user/profile/share

Why would this be the reason?

Usually in business when you partner with someone there is money or services exchanged. A partner usually implies a level of exclusivity between companies either with parts, supplies, software, money, etc. In this case Fitbit has Microsoft HealthVault listed as its sole Partner, not as a supported App, Device, Service, Website or Software.

Obviously there can be more then one partner. However it's not a stretch to assume that Fitbit's current sole partner Microsoft may not be happy with direct competition with Apple if there is a "partnership". The two services have a lot of overlap and both companies want the lions share of this new, fast growing and tremendously lucrative segment of the healthcare industry.

It's not on the "Social Media" page.

It's on Sharing page under Partners.

Yes sorry I mis-labeled the page. Meant to write Sharing (or share as the url says).

Their partnership with Microsoft HealthVault is not the issue -- the reason FitBit doesn't want to integrate with an Open platform like HealthKit is that FitBit charges money for a premium service on their website to analyze your data. While you can enter all kinds of data into their closed system, you can't get it out unless you pay $50 a year.

Integrating with HealthKit would give you many options to look at your data which don't required FitBit.

I think I found a workaround for connecting Fitbit to Healthkit.

You can connect Fitbit to MyFitnessPal which does connect to Healthkit.

So for example, (in theory) if you weigh yourself on your Fitbit Scale and it syncs to MyFitnessPal, then your MyFitnessPal will record your weight. Apple Healthkit will sync with MyfitnessPal which now has your weight which should sync back to Healthkit.

I just set my phone up with those sync settings but since I am at work, I cannot test it to confirm it although I dont see why it wouldn't work.

Try it and see if you can get the workaround to work!
