Handoff not working between iPad and iPhone

i have installed ios 8 on both my iPhone 5 & iPad 4th generation. They are both on the same wifi network & both have Bluetooth switched on. In settings I have made sure hand off is switched on.

I can make a regular call on my iPad but that's where the continuity seems to end. I don't see a button to open Safari on the lockscreen when it is in use on another device, I cant pass a half written email from one device to another, or see Pages documents etc. I'm at a loss.

I had the same issue with my iPhone 5 and iPad air.

After several trials and restarting my iPhone 5 with the home button + on/off switch it is now working.

Air drop can be switched off, but Bluetooth must be on on both the devices.

All that would be fine if Apple advitised this fact before a hole bunch of people went out and sold their Samsung to go back to Apple to use this new feature

It's a dirty trick from Apple that only after the fact that everyone went out and brought a new iPhone that they let us know that you need to be rich and upgrade your pc as well at the same time as buying a new phone

Hi, I am trying to use Handoff between iPad, iMac and iPhone - all are models which have correct capability - have installed Yosemite and iOS8 (iOS8.1 on ipad) turned everything on - everything seems to be OK but it just doesn't work. Tried typing a message on iMac but doesn't pick it up on any other devices and vice versa. Similarly a doc in Pages doesn't come across to other devices.

Read back through the posts and kept following different hints and instructions but nothing makes any difference. I even tried pairing the devices but the connections keep dropping (although apparently you don't need to pair them with Bluetooth 4 installed)

What with spending hours today on this and wasting similar time yesterday being unable to use iMail due to a GMail SMTP server issue I am about to lose faith in Apple... what is going on?

Facetime=> ON; bluetooth=> ON and all will be workng.
