Dictionaries not accessible after upgrading to iOS 8

AWesome! That worked! I went back to my book after 15 min, and definitions are back.

Last night I performed a restore on my iPad in iTunes. This resolved the issue.

On my iPad 3, English and German dictionaries are dead, and the proposed solutions don't help.

TThat did not work afterall. I must have picked a French work, because the french dictionnary seems to work, and i did not noticed the answer was french. Back to square one where the english dictionnary is not loading.😕

Seems to the same issues for most of us that have just updated. Best I found at this time is to use the Spanish - English dictionary, at least you get some sort of meaning from that one.

I had the same problem with my Iphone 5. None of the solutions mentioned here worked. I connected the Iphone to ITunes on my computer and made a full backup. After that the dictionaries worked again!!

I had the exact same problem, Apple and American Oxford Dictionaries became unavailable with empty blue circles and I could not re-download them following upgrade to IOS8. Spent an hour and a half on apple support chat last night with no fix. Tried everything everyone on the internet suggested over the last few days to no avail, but I finally figured out the fix.

1. Open itunes.

2. Choose library, apps and list.

3. Right click iBooks in the list and choose "Show in Itunes Store."

4. Once your on the iBooks Itunes Store page, choose "update."

5. After the iBooks update downloads, connect iPad to computer, make sure iBooks on the iPad is closed, and click choose, File, devices, sync iPad.

6. After sync completes, eject iPad.

7. Open iBooks on iPad, highlight a word, click define, manage and previous dictionaries should be back and functional.

At least this is what worked for me.

Worked !!!! Although my iBooks was already the updated version, once Ipad sync'd and it carried out the backup then my dictionary was fully functional again.

Same problem for me on both iPad mini and iPhone 5 ever since updating to iOS 8. The dictionaries would remain stuck with empty circle symbols beside the ones that I used to have prior to the update. Luckily for me all I had to do was perform an iTunes sync; I did not even have to click on the iBooks app within iTunes...just did a sync and it worked. Also I synced it via WiFi; I am sure the same thing would have worked connecting the Lightning USB cable from iOS device to computer. Thanks gclippard for leading me in the right direction! 🙂 I love how syncing resolves many issues.

I Just updated my ipad to 8.0.2 and all is great! Dictionnaries downloaded finally!

Thank you gclippard. It solved my problem. I used sync over wi-fi.
