iOS 8 has introduced a trivial (in programming terms) yet major usability bug in the Photos application causing all synced events under “Events from my Mac” to be shown in a seemingly random order, entirely different from the order shown in iPhoto for OS X. This makes finding events to show friends nigh on impossible.
Every version of iOS to date has shown events in the correct order that reflected the order used in iPhoto as synced through iTunes. Users are now finding it impossible to locate their events to view as not only the order is out of date, the search bar at the top of the “Albums” tab in the Photos app does not use event names as search cues.
With over 12,500 photos neatly organised into events in my Mac’s iPhoto library, I now have to either forgo showing people photos from events, or open an app like Snapseed and use the system’s photo picker control to find the event in its correct order.
This issue seems isolated to only the Photos app. As stated above, the operating system provides a standard control to access photos on users’ phones. This control shows the events in the correct order, where the Photos app does not.
Until Apple fixes this issue, many users including myself have found the Photos app completely useless for viewing photos synced from our computers. As a photographer, I often have to quickly pull up photos or photo shoots on my phone but I simply can’t find my events anymore without scrolling through the entire list to find the event when it is sorted in a random order.
I assume that this is being treated as a bug and not a feature. Perhaps iOS 8.1 will correct the issue, if not it may need to be escalated.
