family sharing is not working

So today I downloaded IOS 8 on both devices, Ipod 5th generation and Iphone 4S. they both have different accounts. i set up the family sharing on both devices and they were both set up. i went on the Ipod 5th generation to download the previous purchases from the Iphone 4S and all the apps show up but when i try downloading it it comes up with a "redownload unavailable with this apple ID" then it says this download is not available for this apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. i now it was not cancelled or refunded because i play it on my Iphone 4S and it works. then i tried a different paid app and it does the error again saying the same thing. please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, my account is the main account and I added my wife to family sharing. When I look at purchased items on my devices, I can see items purchased under her account. But when she looks at purchased items on her devices, it simply says 'You have no purchases'. That is bulls&&t. I've purchased tons of apps over the years and I've confirmed that most of the apps are sharable. I've tried EVERYTHING in this thread, but this looks like another not-fully-tested Apple feature that was implemented before it was ready.

I'll keep my eye on this thread in the hope that at some point Apple will finally fix this.

So, I was playing around with two of our family iPhone 5S.

Let me know if this works for you as well:

The organizer, it appears, should go to Settings > iCloud > Family > [YOUR NAME: ORGANIZER]. Turn "Share My Purchases" off then turn them back on. DO NOT tap "Stop Family Sharing".

My husband is the organizer, so we "refreshed" his Family Sharing. I, too, followed these steps just make sure my iCloud was refreshed. I'm pretty sure the organizer's iCloud is the one that made a difference. I checked on a third iPhone (5C), which belongs to my mother, and our apps purchased were visible to her.

Hope this helps anyone! I'm hoping we do not keep having this issue.

On another thread regarding a different problem with Family Sharing, people are reporting success by completely wiping their phones and starting as new, re-downloading all the apps etc. (Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings )

This sounds pretty extreme, but I am thinking about doing it. Has anyone tried?

Family Sharing error in iPhone app store

Oct 1, 2014 11:57 AM in response to AmyinUt

That seem to work for me to. But anyway this is a strange error that I hope we get a final solution for it. I am having problem downloading free apps that I had from before wich should not be a Family sharing issue at all since it is free. But Family sharing is making this a problem With giving me no permission to download since it was installed before on my other primary account. The new account I have is going to be my primary account.

Here is my experience so far:

I decided to make a new apple ID when Family sharing came. And use the previous ID for main sharer. First I upgraded to 8.0 then to 8.01. I got the bad News that there where some problems With 8.01 and decided to do a fresh install of 8.02. Did backup of my Iphone 5 and tried to Upgrade to 8.02 and install backup wich of course failed for me since iTunes crashes every time i do a synchronise or try to put my backup into the phone. Anyway I don't miss my backup since I have backed up all my Music and Pictures.

I think the issue may have been corrected.

This morning, I went to the store and looked up a free app that I know another family member has downloaded. Instead of the cloud icon, it showed the "Free" button. I was able to download it. Also, I noticed that Free apps without sharing authorized by the dev no longer appear in the "purchased" list.

Waiting for some updates to roll in to confirm, but fingers crossed: Apple may have fixed this....

Nope, disregard above. Worked briefly today but back to not working.

Non sharable free apps are not listed in the purchases area any more. But if they were purchased by another family member, you still cannot update or download them. When you search them in the store, they show the cloud button, not the install button.

Apple seems to be tinkering with the back end, as it was workingbriefly this morning.

I am using five (5) iPhones, 4s, 5s, 5s,6, and 6. All are using 8.0.2. We have setup Family Sharing.

Sometimes my kids can download apps that I had either purchases or downloaded and sometimes they cannot. I have given up trying to solve this with any combination of restoring, signing in/out, etc. I have reached the conclusion that even if something works, I cannot be sure if it was really fixed or whether the timing was just right for it to seem that something fixed it.

As far as I am concerned, this is a bug that Apple needs to trace and fix or decide to roll back Family Sharing until they can rebuild it to work reliably. Has anyone heard from Apple about this issue? Apple are you there? Are you reading this thread? Please respond with "We hear you and we're trying to figure it out. That would be enough for me to tough this one out. If not, I will have to go back to using a single ID on all five phones ... what a pain in the *** that will be.

Dan,

Compare the iTunes App store description for the apps that can be downloaded versus those that are giving you trouble. I'm willing to be the ones that are giving you trouble don't support family sharing. Apple botched up how the apps that don't support family sharing function. It's a big problem for users and developers and hopefully they'll address it soon.

In the mean time the only workaround that I've found is to sync each device with iTunes on a desktop. Download the problem apps to iTunes through the desktop (best to do it under the organizer's apple id) and then sync each device with the desktop iTunes. This is a pain, but it's the only current work around I'm aware of. Hope that helps.
