family sharing is not working

So today I downloaded IOS 8 on both devices, Ipod 5th generation and Iphone 4S. they both have different accounts. i set up the family sharing on both devices and they were both set up. i went on the Ipod 5th generation to download the previous purchases from the Iphone 4S and all the apps show up but when i try downloading it it comes up with a "redownload unavailable with this apple ID" then it says this download is not available for this apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. i now it was not cancelled or refunded because i play it on my Iphone 4S and it works. then i tried a different paid app and it does the error again saying the same thing. please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

iPhone 4S, iOS 8, ipod 5th generation too

Hey all!

FIrst, I think it's clear there is more than one cause of this error, so sorry if this does not work for you, but here is a suggestion which I don't think has appeared in this thread and worked for me! If you have tried everything else, give this a go:

- Go to Settings>iCloud>Family

- Click on the name of the user of the iPad/iPhone with trouble (the user with"(me)" at the end)

- Make sure that the account name under "family purchases" is the same as the AppleID for that family member. If it is not click on the account name, in blue, and log on with the family member's AppleID in the dialog box that opens.

Although that was the problem to fully get things working I then had to

- log out of the App Store and log back in again (so it realised I had made the changes above)

- download any old free app, so it correctly populated "My Purchases"

I think maybe these would have fixed themselves, in time, but the two steps above forced a refresh and got things working immediately.

Somehow the iPad I had with trouble with was logged on to iCloud with the right AppleID, but that AppleID was set to share purchases from a different AppleID (in fact mine), probably because iCloud was previously logged in with that AppleID before Family Sharing was released. I have no idea why Family Sharing gives you the option to share apps from a different account to the user logged into iCloud. All it seems to do is break the App Store completely.

I was left with 2 apps that would not update, but that was because they were not enabled for family sharing. Luckily, they were both free apps and I was able to uninstall and reinstall to get them working.

One last thing: When "updating all" the App Store seems to work its way down the list. If any one fails, it stops. So if you have tried ANY of the ideas in this thread it is worth checking that the top app in your update list is not disabled from family sharing (shown under "information" on the apps page in the App Store) or it may prevent all the other apps from automatically updating. If it is try uninstalling and reinstalling or manually updating one of the other apps in the list.

Carlos, the issue is not with finding apps purchased by family members.

It is with the App Store not allowing new IDs to download FREE apps that other family members previously "purchased."

Even when going to the list of a Family Members purchased apps, it still says "Redownload Unavailable with This Apple ID."

And to add to the above conversation: I've beem at this since Friday trying to get my husband's 6 Plus stocked with necessary apps. It's been a nightmare. I I honestly wish we'd never turned Family Share on.

We have tried every idea or fix listed on this thread.

Just tries to automatic apps download fix that worked for others and maybe I'm doing it wrong but still no dice.

Noticing a LOT of iOS 8 bugs and thinking they pushed it out way too early.

More family share issues here, though slightly different, I think?

We have family sharing enabled on 2 iPads and 3 iPhones. It works in iTunes, but in App Store, our daughter can't even see her own purchases. She gets the message "this iTunes account is set up to use family sharing with a different iTunes account than ___________."

If we turn iCloud off then she is able to see the purchases again. We've tried logging out, rebooting, logging in, etc. several times.

Her payment method and my payment method still show up in the iTunes store, but we can't delete hers.

That seems to be the issue here. My daughter can download any app or song I have purchased under my new ID (which I've had for 2 years), but anything earlier than that she can't access as it was purchased using my old ID/email address. It's so frustrating as I have a LOT of things I purchased with my old ID. I can access these purchases from my new account without a problem, so it shouldn't be a big issue for my family to either. If there is no fix, then Family Sharing is useless to me. Completely useless.

Very unimpressed Apple.

I'm having the same issue, but the logout/login seems to work.

On another note, this whole Family Sharing wasn't thought out very well it seems. One frustrating thing is that you cannot delete a child account (<13 account). Does this make any sense at all? I was actually just messing around with the feature the first night I upgraded to iOS8 and created an account for my kid with the intention of just deleting it afterwards, but lo and behold it's impossible. How can a parent not delete a child account that they created? this makes absolutely no sense at all to me and I think Apple should really look at this whole Family Sharing feature once again and tweak.

I am going to simply go back to using my Apple ID on all of the devices in my family so that everyone has the apps they need with none of this frustration. Only frustration will be that I have to enter my password on their device everytime they want a new app, but it worked well enough for me the past 5 years...

Okay, my account is the main account and I added my wife to family sharing. When I look at purchased items on my devices, I can see items purchased under her account. But when she looks at purchased items on her devices, it simply says 'You have no purchases'. That is bulls&&t. I've purchased tons of apps over the years and I've confirmed that most of the apps are sharable. I've tried EVERYTHING in this thread, but this looks like another not-fully-tested Apple feature that was implemented before it was ready.

I'll keep my eye on this thread in the hope that at some point Apple will finally fix this.

That seem to work for me to. But anyway this is a strange error that I hope we get a final solution for it. I am having problem downloading free apps that I had from before wich should not be a Family sharing issue at all since it is free. But Family sharing is making this a problem With giving me no permission to download since it was installed before on my other primary account. The new account I have is going to be my primary account.

Here is my experience so far:

I decided to make a new apple ID when Family sharing came. And use the previous ID for main sharer. First I upgraded to 8.0 then to 8.01. I got the bad News that there where some problems With 8.01 and decided to do a fresh install of 8.02. Did backup of my Iphone 5 and tried to Upgrade to 8.02 and install backup wich of course failed for me since iTunes crashes every time i do a synchronise or try to put my backup into the phone. Anyway I don't miss my backup since I have backed up all my Music and Pictures.

I think the issue may have been corrected.

This morning, I went to the store and looked up a free app that I know another family member has downloaded. Instead of the cloud icon, it showed the "Free" button. I was able to download it. Also, I noticed that Free apps without sharing authorized by the dev no longer appear in the "purchased" list.

Waiting for some updates to roll in to confirm, but fingers crossed: Apple may have fixed this....

I am using five (5) iPhones, 4s, 5s, 5s,6, and 6. All are using 8.0.2. We have setup Family Sharing.

Sometimes my kids can download apps that I had either purchases or downloaded and sometimes they cannot. I have given up trying to solve this with any combination of restoring, signing in/out, etc. I have reached the conclusion that even if something works, I cannot be sure if it was really fixed or whether the timing was just right for it to seem that something fixed it.

As far as I am concerned, this is a bug that Apple needs to trace and fix or decide to roll back Family Sharing until they can rebuild it to work reliably. Has anyone heard from Apple about this issue? Apple are you there? Are you reading this thread? Please respond with "We hear you and we're trying to figure it out. That would be enough for me to tough this one out. If not, I will have to go back to using a single ID on all five phones ... what a pain in the *** that will be.

Same problem, here. I used my Apple ID for my kids and we have bought TONS of TV Shows and Movies. After setting up Family Sharing, new purchases worked fine, but then my kid requested a TV series I had already bought and I 'Accepted', it downloaded... and I found in an invoice email that I had been charged AGAIN for the purchase!

Not only is this badly implemented but it's double-charging me?!

I am not happy at all about this.

Yohst poster is right - this is really against Apple's public ethos ("It just works"). In fact, iTunes has always been a stinker with its incredibly torturous menus and buried settings. Remember the me.com rollout and retraction? And iCloud Drive wasn't the most elegant roll-outs, either. As things become more complicated behind the scenes, Apple users are being asked to make up for the shortcomings. The interface is becoming bloated, settings are byzantine and confusing, and stuff that should "just work", doesn't.

I've tried the solutions listed here, simply trying to approve app requests my kids are making. They requests don't show up at all on my iPhone 6, but they do as a banner on my Macbook Air. Unfortunately, clinking on "Details" does absolutely nothing. Here's what makes it even MORE frustrating: it all worked perfectly four hours ago, and no one has many any changes to their devices!!! Though an Apple fanboy, I am thoroughly fed-up. Family Sharing was something I hoped would eliminate a lot of dumb problems that have been present in Apple's ecosystem for a long time. Instead, even more frustration. BOO Apple! You're well on your way to making this committed customer want to investigate other options.

I Have been following this post because family sharing was not working for me. I tried everything and nothing worked for me. I checked tonight and it is working perfectly on all my shared devices! After reading all these and other posts it was clear to me that no one really had a solution that worked for everyone. It is now my opinion that the problem and the solution is in the bowls of the Apple system. Just leave it alone and in a couple days it will begin to work on your device too. Don't worry, be happy...maybe

I Just created a family share for my two kids. One worked fine the other has the same issue as you did. Did you find a solution?

@Museaky

Thank you! This was driving me crazy. Idid just what you said and it let me download the app.

A Couple notes:

  • The app was Pinterest and it is not enabled for family sharing.
  • One of my kids was signed in to the App Store with an Apple ID that was other than her family sharing ID.
  • During my experience there was no little cloud. There was just the usual get button
