family sharing is not working

So today I downloaded IOS 8 on both devices, Ipod 5th generation and Iphone 4S. they both have different accounts. i set up the family sharing on both devices and they were both set up. i went on the Ipod 5th generation to download the previous purchases from the Iphone 4S and all the apps show up but when i try downloading it it comes up with a "redownload unavailable with this apple ID" then it says this download is not available for this apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. i now it was not cancelled or refunded because i play it on my Iphone 4S and it works. then i tried a different paid app and it does the error again saying the same thing. please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

iPhone 4S, iOS 8, ipod 5th generation too

With regard to the "Erase all content and settings" option -- does not work.

I did it on my old phone, then set it up as new. Logged into iCloud using my ID, which is also the family organizer. Unable to download free apps (ones where sharing is not enabled) if they've been downloaded by another family member. Same error - "Redownload Not Available With this AppleID".

This has been a problem for a week now, I'm going to try Apple support, I encourage others to try support as well.

If you see the checkmarks appear next to your Apple id and password bars, go back to Settings > iTunes and App Store and make sure you are signed into the same account. Then try to download instagram one more time after you verify that you are, ok?

Go back to Settings > iTunes and App Store > Account and then Sign Out. We have a couple more steps after that, so let me know when you get there!

If you are signed out, go ahead and hold down the sleep button until you see “Slide to power off” and turn off the device. Give it 5-10 seconds, then power your device back on and sign in again under iTunes & App Store. Try to download it one more time after that.

This is what I was told when I contacted apple. It worked for me!!🙂

It's funny how many people in this thread suggest the exact same thing... Like it didn't work for us the first 33 times someone suggested it, maybe if we suggest it a 34th time it will work!

Logging out and logging back in, in any combination, of any of the places which can be logged out or logged in regarding the Apple store, iCloud, or iTunes - none of them work.

But I did find a solution, and it works 100% of the time:

Turn off iCloud Family Sharing, and wait until iOS 9 when maybe Apple will have got it right...

Man Apple just can't get cloud services right... For the record, I own about a zillion Apple products, and have about a zillion plus invested in iTunes content - I am as big an Apple fan as there is - but they just can't get this cloud stuff right.

iClous family sharing should be easy. I don't even understand how this could even break like this. It is dead simple:

3 Accounts:

Account1, Account2, Account3

User is attempting to use an iTunes resource: is it licensed to Account1? If not, is it licensed to Account2? If not is it licensed to Account3?

Done. No need for anything tricky. Just iterate through the list of accounts in the iCloud family. Thats all they need to do.

When buying something: Is user an adult? If yes, buy - if no request approval.

Done. No need for anything tricky...

Apple come on - this was going to be my killer feature for iOS 8. (Yes, I have sent feedback, and I even have open bug reports on these issues - I am a developer...)

I took this issue up with Apple support, and just got eh following info from them:

.. some customers are also having the same issue and currently, Apple is working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported.

So at least someone is working on it.

Also they gave me this workaround:

sign out of your iCloud account, iTunes & App Stores, close iTunes & App Stores from background processes, sign back into iCloud and iTunes, and then reopen App Store. Now apps that are not sharable are appropriately showing as Free and they're able to download and apps that have been purchased by other Apple ID are showing a price, but when attempting to purchase, recognize that it is available as previous purchase from family member's shared account.

This is working for me, as long as I do not access the "purchased" category. As soon as I go in there, the original problem comes back.

I know everyone has suggested their own resolutions to the headache that is Family Sharing, so here's what worked for me.

I finally resolved this by...

  • Signing out of iTunes & App Store under Settings on my wife's iPhone, and do not sign back in.
  • Delete the offending apps that aren't updating.
  • Search for the app within the App Store.
  • Now that you're signed out of iTunes, you'll get the "Free" button (or the cost) instead of the "Cloud" button, so it treats it as a new download instead of an existing one.
  • Click Free > Install, and it will prompt you to log in with your Apple ID.
  • Entering the new Apple ID now should allow it to download.

Using my wife's new Apple ID worked from this point for some reason. So I had to delete and re-download a few apps, but doing it this way at least allowed me to do so.

I tried it and it didn't work for me, but what did work for me was in App Store going to purchased> then organizers purchases and on apps that needed to be updated selecting update and then I was prompted to enter password and it started downloading update.. YIPPIE! it was a pain in the booty because I had to do that for each update which is time consuming but it worked. You would think that before Apple releases new software especially something like this they would make it a little more user friendly. I feel like the update to ios8 has been a step backwards for apple but I'm confident they will work it out I just hope it's sooner than later.
