My wife is having the same problem, but I am not. The only difference we can find is that the problem began after we opened iBooks and found that the store was offering several free books. One book she selected wouldn't completely install, and her iBooks began crashing. She finally gave up and went to sleep. I'm guessing that if she is able to delete that one book from iCloud, she should be back to normal. I'd appreciate any other suggestions.

Great that you have been able to get it working again!

Unfortunately, restoring a device as a new device is not really an option for many people as a fix. I have too many apps on both my devices where I would lose all my data, as there is no way to export it or save it in iCloud/Dropbox. It would be nice if there was a way to erase only the data for iBooks, but unfortunately that's no longer possible in iOS8.

I restored my iPad as a new device as well. It worked and wasn't too cumbersome. Before starting the process, I backed it up over iTunes - just in case - and then took screen shots of all the apps listed in my Settings. When I had the pad up again ready for content, I went to the App store and installed one after the other reinstalled the apps. You need to re-enter the passwords only if you didn't save them in iCloud and then synchronize the iPad over iTunes and you have everything back. Not that big a deal, it turned out.

However, I agree, in that this is not an efficient way to do upgrades and flat-out bad business to essentially require people to update to new and improved operating systems via a new device setup. Apple should have done a better job testing the upgrade install. It's not like they don't know how their users use their devices - i.e., if a user downloaded 1000 books they likely have them all on the pad and spend a significant amount of time reading ⚠, etc. - and it shouldn't be too much to expect them to design and mirror their test cases to closely resemble the kind of installs their users have and to how those users are going to update their devices. This isn't the first time where I had to install from scratch because the regular update messed things up.

Hi,

this happened to me for the first time last night. I have an Ipad 2 wifi and I upgraded to Ios 8.02 a few days ago, after upgrading to IOS 8.0 first. I am using iBooks frequently and never had an issue before.

The continuous crashes happened after I had changed my Apple ID and when iBooks asked me if the sync should be done with the new Apple ID I had used. I use 2 Apple ID for 2 different countries to get access to contents in 2 different languages. I said no the the sync, then problems started.

I tried several options and eventually this is what worked for me. Let me say however that not all steps and/or actions may be necessary or may be done in that order :

1) completely close the iBooks app (double tap, and then close it)

2) go into settings - Itunes & App store - and log out

3) still in settings, go to the iBooks part and unselect the 2 options for sync and the one for online content

3) open iBooks and ensure that "Hide iCloud books" is off

4) do not input your Apple ID yet

5) Test iBooks and normally it should be more stable. Mine did not crashed anymore after this.

I then progressively registered again my Apple ID and password in settings, while keeping iBooks running in the background and progressively reset the sync options.

So far (after 2 hours) it is still working.

Good luck to all

Fabrizio

Hi Fabrizio,

I've just tried it on my iPad Air and so far it does indeed appear to work. Not only that, iBooks seems to be a lot faster than it ever was before trying this. Where it first took a few minutes to sync bookmarks and collections, it now only appears to take a few seconds (at least so far). Even on iOS 7 iBooks was never this fast for me. I'll try it on my iPhone later on, but so far, it's looking pretty good.

Many thanks for the tip!

Its been how long since IOS8 and still no fix. I finally submitted a ticket and this is what i got back

from iTunes Store Support. Before I proceed, I would like to first apologize for the delay in responding to your request, as this is certainly not the customary wait time for a reply from iTunes Store Customer Support. We've experienced higher volumes than usual and we very much appreciate your patience.

I understand that you are trying to purchase iBooks on your devices but haven’t been successful after updating to the iOS8 version. I know this has been frustrating and I will be happy to investigate this issue further.

Cicely, Apple is currently working toward a resolution for this issue. In the mean time try powering off the devices to see if this helps. Unfortunately with the new iOS8 version your cannot uninstall/reinstall the iBooks application.

You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.

Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible.

Sincerely,

This did nothing to actually fix the problem. Its been so long I was out of books so i did as i threaten and went back to Amazon and bought the next 2 books in my series. There are 2 more and if by Tue when i will more than likely finish these 2 i will buy the next from Amazon. Amazon is happy to take my money if Apple isn't.

APPLE FIX THIS LIKE YOU FIXED U2! Give us back our ability to uninstall and reinstall at will.
