My wife is having the same problem, but I am not. The only difference we can find is that the problem began after we opened iBooks and found that the store was offering several free books. One book she selected wouldn't completely install, and her iBooks began crashing. She finally gave up and went to sleep. I'm guessing that if she is able to delete that one book from iCloud, she should be back to normal. I'd appreciate any other suggestions.
Just installed iOS 8.0.2, but unfortunately the crashes haven't been fixed yet. Judging by the the logs in the Diagnostics & Usage section, it's still being caused by the exact same problem. I've reported a bug to Apple about this, so let's hope it will be fixed soon. Not being able to use iBooks is really annoying.
I've just replaced my iPhone 5 with an iPhone 6, but now I'm experiencing the exact same crashes on my iPhone as well. So it would seem that this is an issue with 64-bit devices. This is really a bummer, as I now can't use iBooks at all anymore while I'm commuting, which is when I use iBooks the most.
WWorks so far we'll see if they fix this
WOrk around disable the cloud books aka hide icloud books
Same problem on my iPad 2. Read a few pages in a book and then it freezes. Have to do a hard reset to restart the iPad. This is happening since I upgraded to iOS 8.0.2. It didn't seem to happen with 8.0.
8.0.2 does seem to have fixed the problem of not being able to download apps, but now iBooks is completely screwed.
I think I may try to downgrade back to iOS 7 until Apple come up with a proper fix. What a shame.
So glad I am not the only one having problems downloading books - I thought I was doing something wrong or there was something wrong with my laptop (new to apple products)
Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately it doesn't work for me. iBooks still crashes on both my devices with purchased books set to hidden. One additional thing I have noticed though, is that both my devices get very hot after launching iBooks.
I had the same problem, but last night (9/28) it started to work. I expect Apple changed something in the communication with iBooks.
You're right, something does seem to have changed. iBooks is still crashing for me, but it now takes much much longer for iBooks to crash. Where it was first 3-5 minutes, it's now more along the lines of 15 minutes. Unfortunately my devices still get quite hot and iBooks drains the battery very quickly, but at least it is a step forward.
I just restored by Ipad 2 with ios 8.0.2 and ibooks is still crashing, progress wheel still spinning, and I can't download a recent purchase showing in purchased section. This is so frustrating as I use by ipad primarily for reading! APPLE NEEDS TO FIX IBOOKS! I turned off my wifi but progress wheel is still spinning. Hopefully it won't crash.
I am having the same issue with my iPad mini. I also notice my iPad over heats and my battery life drains super fast. I am not happy with this!
Having the same problem. Apple had me do backup and restore. Still crashing and spinning. They said problem hadn't become an emerging one yet.
i have the same problem, with a lot of intermittent, unpredictable features: does not open, changes in page color, impossible to save the book in the iPad,.
also the tool for finding definition of words seems empty.
it looks like some fix should be provided by apple
I restored my ipad AS A NEW DEVICE THEN SYNCED WITH ITUNES and everything in ibooks works perfectly! I previously restored from my back up and had the same problems as before but after chatting with the apple support person found doing that just put the problems back on my ipad. Again, restore as new device then sync with iTunes.
Thanks for the information. Will try this out when I get home. Hopefully this will fix it as this problem has been driving me insane for over a week now.
