Same problem, the main camera (iphone 5) doesn't focus after ios 8 update. Also sometimes there is a noise, like scratching.

Tried to recover the phone, but itunes can't connect to the server. Other advice like removing a case or deleting photos or shaking the phone don't work, nothing helps.

Please if you find a solution, write it down in this topic.

So.. i have found my problem... i was in appstore genius .. and they said me that IOS 8 camera has new feature. This feature focuss on the first element that camera see.. I have very small dust inside in the camera.. And the camera focuss on this dust (on the glass of rear case). Tommorow i have appointment in genius and they will clear this dust for free. After cleaning i will write here.. is it works or not.

Same issue, Apple store told me it's a hardware issue and i will need to buy a new phone. I was told that if it was a software issue they'd be replacing everyones phones. Really irritated with this situation. Telling me as soon as I update and use the camera for the first time it goes pink and then blacks out and nothing seems to fix it that it's a hardware issue. Iphone 5....

After a little over a week with a non functioning back camera, today it came back to life just as inexplicably as when it stopped working in the first place. My issue was the same, front camera working and back camera entirely black and unresponsive. Even tried performing a full restore via itunes a few times, without any luck. Today when I was going to demonstrate the problem to a friend (as I've already done so many times with almost everyone I know), the camera was working again, just like that.

So I guess there's hope for you, good luck

Apple told me to reset my iPhone to factory settings, which did not solve the problem. So they told me it's probably hardware so I have to bring my iPhone back to the store for repair. Since there are many people having the same problem, I can't imagine it's a hardware issue? First, the app freezes and the screen shows pink ghost-like structures of what the camera should display. Few moments after the screen goes black.

I have warranty left for 2 more months, so I decided to wait for an update of iOS8 for few days/weeks. Never thought this would happen when spending €800 on an iPhone...

I updated and a few things happened

1. My ringtones wouldn't work then all of a sudden they came back

2. Apps freeze that didn't freeze prior

3. The back camera is black

ive seen where people were told to reboot other told to restart bit keep thw phone off for 10 seconds.. I tried both and nothing..

so FRUSTRATING!!!

If you've found a remedy to this problem please share

Same issue for me. After upgrading to 8.0, 8.0.1, 8.0.2 the iphone 5 camera does not work anymore.

Restoring the iphone with the backup will not solve.

SOLUTION:

If I restore the iphone as a new phone (no backup), the camera works fine.
