FWIW I found this solution in the Using iPhone community:

Re: Photostream folder disappeared in iOS 8, along with all my photos in that folder. Please help!in response to sk8ersublime

I went to Apple Chat and they said the photos are still on iCloud, however they have moved.

Find them in photos either

photos/shared(lower center)/activity

or

photos/photos(lower left)/collections/moments.

I was missing some photos that were on my Mac photo stream. So they had me have log out of iCloud (settings/icould/scroll to bottom) *leave photos on phone. Then logged back in.

looks like I'm up to 300 or so synced from iCloud (old photos stream).

Or you might try turning My Photo Stream off and back on in the Settings/iCloud pane.

I can't find my ANY of my pictures. Nothing in Photos tab, nothing in Shared tab, nothing in albums, and nothing in Collections . All I have is 6 pics that I took over the weekend. Where in the world did all my pictures go?? Even if all these posts say that the ios 8 keeps every picture from the last 30 days, I still have NOTHING...can anyone out there help? Not happy!

Can't hardly understand why Apple took away the very usefull camera roll. Hundreds of pics from all the last few years that could not be sorted in Itunes albums because they were mostly singular occasionally taken photos or copied pics from the net are now mixed up into heaps of date and place defined albums between tens of thousands of photos from the Itunes synchronized albums. Impossible to find them in a second as before... Now millions of people need to unsynchronize the albums in Itunes, install another new private camera roll album, copy or move all the remaining pics in the Iphone in that new private album and resynchronize the rest of the albums... Apple just should keep up what's good, and concentrate on really innovative stuff and OS features, instead of causing trouble to their customers by taking away stuff that worked well. Wandering *** inside Apple had this amazing idea....Hope Apple will bring Camera roll back in the next release ! I mean this would be very much appreciated by millions of people... !!!!

Same problem here. Photos prior to Aug 2nd 2014 all vanished after IOS8 download. Have spent 6 hours talking to various Apple people today, had my phone wiped & re-set TWICE, after which I lost more photos, those taken before Aug11tg, 2014!!

Apparently they are in my iCloud account, but FIVE Apple Support staff, (2 in Ireland, one in Kentucky and two in Nashville) tried & were unable to return them to my phone. By 20.40 I called it a day after an entire afternoon of frustrating tail-chasing. Will get back to them tomorrow.

So much for backing-up on iCloud- not much of a storage depot if it refuses to release data when asked.

Am also not impressed by the disappearance of Camera Roll, this wasn't broken so why did Apple decide to mess around like this and create such a mess?

The ApPoe experience has been very disappointing.

I now regret not buying the Samsung Galaxy 5 and am considering dumping the 5C And getting on anyway.

Definitely not buying any more Apple products again unless they can seriously get their act together quickly.

I think that their spell of riding on the crest of a wave may bed over.
