FWIW: The bug does not seem to be related to iOS 8 itself, but rather how iOS 7 was upgraded to iOS 8 (something was not updated or replaced correctly). I restored my iPad using freshly downloaded iOS 8 IPSW and the problem has not popped up again since doing so (over 24 hours now, where, before the restore, the issue would return as quickly as waking after only a few minutes of sleep, or waking it after many hours of sleep).

If you wanted to try what I did and are not familiar with the restore device and then restore user data process, it is nothing to worry about and only takes about 15-30 minutes (not including transferring videos and music back over), and the steps are as follows:

  1. Connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes if it doesn't launch on its own.
  2. If not already checked, make sure that that the "Encrypt local backup" option is checked, that you remember (or possibly save) the password, and perform a manual backup using the "Back Up Now" button. (The option allows you to restore passwords along with regular user data for particular restore from backup operations.)
  3. Disable "Find My iPad" on your iPad. (Do not skip this step, it needs to be done when restoring an iOS device.)
  4. Click the "Restore iPad" button (not the "Restore Backup" button).
  5. When the restore process finishes, your iPad will exist as if it were fresh from the factory with a fresh iOS 8 install (rather than an upgrade to iOS 8). Once available, iTunes will ask if you want to set up your iPad as a new device, or if you want to restore from a backup. You can safely choose to restore from a backup (that which was created during Step 2 above) at this point and restore all your user data. Note that applications should also be reinstalled automatically including and within whatever folders may have existed when the initial sync takes place after the user data restore from backup; and, if they don't, wait for that initial sync to complete, go to the "Applications" tab and click the "Apply" button. Finally, you will be asked to enter your pass code again, and, this is normal, since it something that is used at the system level and not the user level, so reenter your pass code; your auto-lock settings should have been be restored with your user data.
  6. If "Find My iPad" was enabled when the device was backed up per Step 2 listed above, then you should not have to enable it again after restoring user data from backup. However, it does not hurt to make sure that is case.

BTW: I deleted the existing IPSW for iOS 8 for iPad from my computer before going about the restore process. I did not compare create dates, but just in case Apple made something newer available for download (not referring to an update of iOS 8, just a newer file)... This is just something I do, and I do not think it is an always necessary step.

That's it. Transfer your movies, videos and music back over, and you should be good to go, and hopefully this "Multitasking Gestures" issue does not come back. If the problem doesn't come back within the next couple of days (already been just over 24 hours with no issues), then I will update the Apple Bug that I logged.

Good luck.

Just wanted to add to the chorus... Same issue here with iPad after iOS8 botch up. Five finger swipe/close no longer working.

And a slight vent... FFS Apple get your s*it together! Thanks for leaving me with iPhones that can no longer be used for making and receiving calls too via Bluetooth. Much appreciated.

While I'm having a little vent, can't say I'm very excited about the upcoming Yesomite release. Please try not to f**k that up too badly.
