iPad Air, iOS 8 and random reboots with blue screen

I Updated my iPad Air 16gb wifi model with iOS 8 yesterday and since then I am facing random reboots with blue screens. Is this a known issue or am I in trouble ?

Hello drdhruba,

I just wanted to let you know that this issue HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED for me with iOS 8.0.2

My best observations is that it relates directly to Safari. I've 'Killed' the Safari task & I haven't had a BSOD since. So in a way you could say that (in a way) the problem HAS been resolved, but now I don't have a web browser. So instead of Safari, I now use Google Chrome.

But you HAVE to 'Kill' Safari in the Task Manager (double-clicking the home button & swiping Safari out of the Task Manager)! If Safari is running in the background, it can bomb at random times. I've even opened my iPad (sinceclosing the cover) to find that the iPad has rebooted... 😮

So potentially, having Safari running will cause your device to continually reboot & you wouldn't even know about it.

My suspicion is that this relates to the Safari restart bug which would occur in iOS-7 when you'd occasionally 'pinch/zoom', or more regularly just cerf FaceBook through your news feed. Someone fixed the iOS-7 memory hole error & created an iOS-BSOD event instead... 😟

Yep. Me too. I upgraded ~2 to 3 hours ago (3am local time?). Woke up just now, used the iPad for <15 minutes, doing a pinch/zoom & the iPad reset.

This wasn't the same BSOD that I'd previously experienced, but I got the Apple logo, there was no blue screen portion, the reboot was faster.

Aren't Apple products supposed to "Just Work"? That's what the fanboys keep telling me... <facepalm>

It appears that I may have jumped the gun on the evaluation of 8.1. The reboot problem that occurred may have been 3rd party app related. I had it happen a second time while using the same app. It wasn't the same BSOD as over the last two weeks just a black sceen then the apple logo before the lockscreen appeared again. Over an hour of use with YouTube, without an issue, that was causing the BSOD problem after only about 20 mins.

I also have had no issues since installing iOS 8.1 about 4 hours ago. Not one BSOD and reboot. I've been using all the apps that I was using when previously I'd get the BSOD. It's like I have my beloved iPad back!

Just to provide a little background detail, I did the 8.0 upgrade, then the 8.0.2. Right away I experienced intermittent issues with WiFi and the BSOD and rebooting every 20 minutes. I did not try any of the factory restore recommendations that appeared in these posts... mainly because I've been playing a game for the last 3 months and didn't want to lose my progress. The only thing I did was monitor this thread and run the 8.1 upgrade earlier today.

If anything changes I'll repost, but so far I'm a very happy iPad user again. To everyone, as someone who shared in the frustration with this experience, I sincerely hope the issue becomes resolved for you all as well.

Cheers!

Hi All,

Its not about the OS issue here, problem with OS upgrade process. Even i had seen this issue when i restored all my old data. If you don't restore your and use it as a New iPad/iPhone the issue is not seen. I had followed this process 11 days back(10th Oct) and till now i did not even seen a single reboot.

If you want to come out this issue follow the below steps and don't waste your time and others time as well keep on positing the discussions.

Important message : After recovery mode is completed do not restore your back up reinstall everything as if new.

Use recovery mode

You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:

  • iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
  • You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
  • You see the Connect to iTunes screen.

Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes. To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your device and leave it off.
  2. Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
  3. Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  4. When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.

When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.

After recovery mode is completed do not restore your back up reinstall everything as if new.

Veera4u - clearly the issue is not the same for everyone... The blue screen reboot could be cause due to several reasons... The solution you have provided and countless other on this group and other groups do not work for most people... I for one have tried this and various combinations more than 5 times... It's great if it worked for you...

my issues have been solved with a simple ios 8.1 over the air update... It may not be the solution for everyone, but it worked for me... I suggest people still having problems to report them via bug reporter with new crash logs... The new crashes maybe of a different nature, even though they may seem similar on the surface
