iPad Air, iOS 8 and random reboots with blue screen

I Updated my iPad Air 16gb wifi model with iOS 8 yesterday and since then I am facing random reboots with blue screens. Is this a known issue or am I in trouble ?

I'll just mention this about my iPad Air. It's suffering from a random blue screen reboot problem- works perfectly fine until suddenly "out of the blue", blue screen followed by the Apple logo. It'll work fine again for several hours, a day at most, before "out of the blue" again blue screen and reboot. Since it was suggested by customer care, I connected to iTunes and clicked restore, then chose to restore as new- no backups, no third party apps nor data synced and without even logging in to icloud(since some people found disabling icloud to work). BSOD twice the next day.

The thing is this- Apple ships out millions of iPads and iPhones. Compared to a hundred thousand or less of us affected, nearly everyone that updated to ios 8 might not have a random blue screen reboot problem. So it is perfectly possible that we all have faulty units. Apples warranty comes in handy only here. HOWEVER MY IPAD (AND PROBABLY YOUR IDEVICE TOO) WAS WORKING PERFECTLY ALRIGHT UNTIL IOS 8(ok so I did suffer from a safari refreshing problem in early ios 7 versions, but it got fixed in a later update 😁) IT IS MOST PROBABLY THE OS, SINCE THE REBOOTS HAPPEN TOTALLY RANDOMLY AND OTHERWISE THE DEVICE WORKS FINE MOST OF THE TIME!

Then I noticed this yesterday> I had NOT setup icloud after restoring the device, nor made any association with my Apple ID BUT MY EMAIL WAS THERE ON THE USERNAME FIELD of as if I had only LOGGED OUT of everthing(icloud, facetime, iMessages and even Do Not Track) when I clearly removed all data on my iPad, and clean installed iOS through itunes without loading any data!(i.e by setting up as new) So I restored ocnce more(I didnt re download iOS 8.0.2, it was already there on my PC), and this time when I came to the page where I have to choose between set up as new or restore backup, I unplugged my iPad from the PC. No trace of my icloud or Apple ID now and have been using it from 80% to 28% battery (just over a day) only stock ios apps and MOST IMPORTANTLY no random blue screen reboots YET. I'll setup iCloud and see eventually if everything is alright.

So it can be an itunes problem, or even iCloud with iDrive and all the new features messing things up on devices. Or it could be the usual; iOS, hardware or both combined- my "out dated" iPhone 5 on iso 8.0.2 has no reboot issues- blue screen or otherwise. 😝

As for suggestions, either go swap your device for a new one by Apple, or restore again though itunes, then without installing backup or setting up as new from itunes, unplug and test for a while without setting up icloud. It's too early for me to conclude whether it worked, so I'll be checking more, but if you're satisfied, set up icloud and see. Then connect to itune and load app data or download all the apps again from the app store. If this doesn't work or things go blue totally out of the blue again at some point, pray to god that Apple will keep the promise they made to Biriju. 🙂

OOh boy , I was wondering if I did something terrible while update (which is just plug and download ) , to get this irritating BSOD. I was thinking I was the only one facing this problem, thank god I googled it and landed on this forum. It seems it only happens on iPad air. Great to know that it has been patched from BIRJU.

IT is really irritating , can't use chrome, cant play asphalt and now it even crashes every now n then. Hope to receive the update soon and a good update too.

THank you.

Oh well, I hope you all get it sorted... For info regarding mi bsod iPhone 5s... What I done was back it up and then uploaded the backup onto my old iPhone 5... No issues for 4 days! So I sent the 5s back and purchased another 5s with 8 months apple warranty left.

uploaded my last iCloud backup from the 5 onto the 5s (daring I know)... Been working as it should now for over two days!

try and explain the software glitch that was on one device... Backup up and ran faultlessly of another! Must be hardware related to certain batches of devices! Can't think of any other reason why just us select few affected!

I also removed all of my data and did a clean install from iTunes and then I set my iPad Air up as a new device. I have not had any blue screens since doing this. I too am only using the apps that came with the ipad and am using iOS 8.0.2. I am now also up to the process of elimination to see what is causing the blue screens.

I'll keep you all posted

Update. took my 3rd Air into Apple Store. They advised not a hardware fault. Suggested setting up as a new iPad and not restoring. I explained I had done this with no. 3 and it BSOD within 2-3 hours of getting it home. Appears to be specific to Safari use. They suggested it was not a widespread problem. I pointed out in my experience it had affected 67% of my iPads so that was pretty high. However with new models to be released tomorrow they said there was a chance they would give me a credit on the iPad Air for a new unit. Of course they wouldn't confirm whwther or not there will be new models.

Hi,

JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN RESOLVED FOR ME COMPLETELY EVEN WITH IOS 8.0.2.

I contacted the Apple helpline and they instructed me the following steps which resolved my issue. I also noted that the random blue screen re-boot is probably has noting to do with the IOS and iPad configuration rather it is because of the installed apps which crashes because of not having proper timely compatibility upgrades to these apps. I have not seen this issue happening with my iPad from last 2 weeks now. Another very important thing is that the battery life has come to it's previous state. It is no more draining the iPad baterry like the way it used to be while the random blue screen re-boots were taking place.

The steps which are recommended to me by Apple was as follows.

1. First of all try to hard reset the iPad by pressing the home button and the power button together. Then look for further episodes of random blue screen re-boots. If you notice the random blue screen re-boots still occurring go to the next step.

2. If the first step fails the next step is to do a Reset all settings in the iPad. This is done by going to the Settings -->General -->Reset -->Reset all settings.

3. If the Reset all settings step fails then next step is to Restore the iPad using your Mac's iTunes. Please note you first take backup of your contents in iTunes. then restore the iPad as a new using iTunes. As Apple server contains only the latest version of the IOS it will the reset as new iPad but with the latest version of the iOS.

After restoring the iPad as new do not restore the contents and the apps immediately. You need to observe the iPad for at least 24 hours without installing any apps. If still the iPad is having the random blue screen re-boots there may be some hardware issues and you need to take your iPad to a nearest authorised service centre. I am sure in majority of the cases there should not be any issues after restoring the iPad to it;s factory setting but with the new IOS. After 24 hours of observation you may like to install your apps.

Hope this helps !
