iPad Air, iOS 8 and random reboots with blue screen

I Updated my iPad Air 16gb wifi model with iOS 8 yesterday and since then I am facing random reboots with blue screens. Is this a known issue or am I in trouble ?

Came across this thread after having a BSOD. the problem I'm having is mine doesn't reboot it just won't come back at all even after a soft reboot. I pluged into my computer and itunes and it was detected as being in recovery mode. I downloaded the latest OS and did a restore from backup and it came back for about 20 seconds. As soon as I went into the mail app it bricked again. If I try a soft reset now it just shows the apple logo and never turns off.

I'll try to do a clean restore with no restore from backup as some here have tried and see what happens. I'm out of warranty so Apple won't help. I've never had any issue with my other Apple devices so this is quite disappointing. Can't say I'll stay with the brand if this doesn't get resolved.

I have an iPad Air that has these same blue screen issues. It will sometimes reboot spontaneously by itself while sitting in standby mode (charging on the table, for instance). Other times, while I'm accessing the App Store or something else will just go to blue screen or reboot. The iPad has been babied, never dropped and in a heavy duty case since the day I purchased it.

I don't know much about recalls or class-action lawsuits but it feels like this may be a common hardware problem that Apple needs to address. It is very frustrating to have the device so unreliable with no real answer as to why it's happening.

Has Apple given any indication somewhere as to why this is happening, or even acknowledging that this is a widespread problem?

Many thanks

Still no fix, and I'm running the latest version of iOS (8.1.2) My iPad air 16gb Wifi keeps rebooting with a bsod every 15 minutes or so. Sometimes it gets so bad that it does not even manages to complete the reboot before a new bsod kicks in. It´s then stuck in a continuous reboot-cycle until i put it in DFU mode and restore it.... My iPad worked perfectly until I upgraded to iOS 8 in October. I have never dropped it or anything so it's definitely a software problem. I have considered contacting Apple but I'm not sure if i want to spend like a month to get it replaced with the crappy support they have in Norway...

Seriously.. Fix this Apple😠

After trying everything I could to fix this (restoring from different computers, different USB/Lightning cables, etc), I decided to send the iPad in to Apple for them to "repair" it. Here's the quoted amount below: $327.37. All because their iOS update bricked my iPad.

For a lifelong Apple Geek (who's interviewed for jobs twice in Cupertino), this is a super tough pill to swallow.

I was on the phone with Apple today for a while- they were extremely helpful, courteous and professional, but have decided that since my iPad will not restore using multiple computers and multiple cables then something is wrong with the hardware. This iPad showed absolutely no signs of any problems or issues at all until less than 24 hours after I updated to iOS8. I can't believe that mine and all the other iPads owners on this thread just happened to have gotten the same hardware problem at the same time.

I'm guessing there is a component/design flaw in these iPads that is failing because of a change in the iOS8 software (something overheating perhaps?). Or perhaps the component is failing at about the same time for most (12-14 months from the date of manufacture). If I had more time to investigate, I think I could find a common thread between these iPads and why they are all failing at near the exact same 3-4 month window. I don't know how recalls work, but I think Apple should take a look into it.

Anyways- I'm curious for those on this forum who've experienced the problem, have any of you gotten your iPad to start working correctly again? I'm guessing it's too late for mine. Something damaged it the day I upgraded to iOS8 (and it wasn't me dropping it).

If you've been able to fix your iPad through restoring it, and don't have any more blue screen/reboot problems, please mention it in this thread so we know it's possible and not a hardware failure.

Many thanks

I have the BSOD and restart problem too but my iPad has always been iOS8 as I only got it for Christmas (the restarts started on Christmas Day). As soon as I downloaded games and started playing them the BSOD keep happening. I have lost track the amount of times my iPad Mini 2 32gb has restarted but it needs to stop! I know my iPad has no viruses because I have anti virus software, so it has to be iOS.

Apple fix this stupid problem or you will have hundreds of extremely angry fans of Apple! My iPad is useless with all these restarts and its BRAND NEW!

😠😠😠

Just went to the switch apple store in Gent.

Latest update caused bsod screen on my ipad air 32gb a1474.

Restarts began also on Christmasday. Reinstalling, repairing didn't work.

There seems to be hardware conflicts with the new update.

The good news is i'm getting a new ipad since I just fall within the warranty period.

Thumbs up for the service I got from apple today, very friendly and helpfull.

I bought my ipad second hand. Never expected that i would get a new one.

Thanks for the info, GnatWings. I would definitely get the device replaced before your warranty expires. I waited 57 days too long and had to pay $300 for the repair (replacement).

I have a feeling this problem (if it is truly related to the OS8 update) is something so core to the OS that an easy fix is not possible, else they would have issued an update by now, knowing that people's iPads are getting destroyed by the day. I'm guessing they will replace the iPads they must (those still under warranty) and replace the problematic component with a higher tolerance one in future devices. An iPad recall would be too much of a PR nightmare for them- I doubt it has anything to do with the financial cost of replacing folks iPads.

Apple service is great as long as you are in warranty. I was four weeks out and the Apple Genius was, sorry out of warranty, We can fix it for $300 (new replacement for the same model is $400).

"Let me see what the trade in value is..." taps on his working iPad "Oh..., sorry". Meaning nothing.

While I love the form factor of my iPad I'm not spending $600 on a replacement. I'll go back to a laptop and use my iPhone 6+ for the apps I've bought assuming it too does not go up.

I used to qualify the cost of Apple products due to quality design and engineering, well not any more.

My only question now is, if I was to get it replaced, wouldn't the problem just happen again? Like as I said my iPad is brand new and it has this problem, if I was to get it replaced with a brand new iPad, wouldn't that iPad have the same problem if it is the software? I dont live close to an Apple Store is the only problem and I dont want to spend hundreds of dollars on fuel to only get a new iPad that has the exact same problem. Any ideas?
