This idea has been posted in this thread before. As Tommyvercetti wrote, it doesn't last.

Any potential solution that involves restarting the iDevice will seem to work, but only for a while. It's the restart that does the trick.

It sure seems like when an iPhone or iPad first joins the WiFi network, iTunes recognizes it. But the next time iTunes attempts to connect, iTunes can't find the device. Just a guess, but I think this has something to do with the new WiFi security procedures built into iOS 8.

ok, so basically it took a mish-mash of all of the suggestions here to get it working.-- I really kept trying until it worked. stupid I know.

- Reset network settings- make sure you get the request to trust the phone and accept it on the phone. I did that once before with no go, but this time it worked.

-shut down itunes and restart

-Plug iphone in to computer- uncheck wifi sync, apply then sync with cable

-check sync with wifi apply and then sync with cable

unplug phone from itunes and restart.

That is when my phone showed up.

When I called Apple support, they had asked me to check if my modem had new firmware, like there was some need to update my modem!

Boy, apple software can be buggy.

I can tell those following this discussion one thing......I am running the beta version of Yosemite with 8.0.2 and the most recent version of iTunes and it is still an issue with wifi. It does work when I restart both my iPhone 5 and iPad and they stay connected as long as iTunes is open (have not lost their connection after 4 hours which is a start) but that's as good as it gets kids. I, too, hope that iTunes 12 and 8.1 brings a successful fix!
