I was going to report that iOS 8.1 fixed WiFi sync for me as for the past 3 days all my devices were seen by iTunes and was able to sync.

But on day 4, it has changed. Many of my devices have disappeared from iTunes again (iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPad Air 2, iPad Air). I can't get them to be seen by iTunes until I reboot them. It does not appear to be something which has impacted all of my iDevices as my spare iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are still currently visible in iTunes

I guess this is better than before but it's still not working properly

That's nothing new; every iPhone I have had with every iOS version that supports WiFi syncing has done this. I suspect its because WiFi on iOS devices is turned off to save battery when they phone goes to sleep, unless it is connected to power.

My i devices were randomly appearing after the 8.1 update. At the same time (unrelated), I installed a new Airport Extreme 6th gen. I went to settings WiFi on each i device, forgot the network (mine), and then reconnected to my network and told it to save the password. No problems connecting to iTunes using WiFi since, and that has been three days now.

WIFI sync has ALWAYS only worked when an ios device is PLUGGED in to an ac receptacle!! It is a requirement for it to work!!

I too have noticed in the past that rarely my iPhone would not show up in the iTunes device list. I'm pretty sure that wasn't when it was asleep, though.

That's false. You may be thinking of the fact that plugging in a device automatically launches a WiFi sync. But you could always initiate a WiFi sync from the device or iTunes even when it was not plugged in.

I stand corrected!! As many ios devices as I have, I have never tried to sync wifi without plugging the device in. Learn something new every day!! Just did it with my 4s which is my worst case scenario, so I'm still fixed with the new itunes and 8.1!!

Is that not what these discussion forums are for - learning from and contributing to each other's enjoyment of all things Apple? We're all tickled that you learned something new today - make sure you pay it forward in one way or another. And keep contributing to the discussions! Folks like you are in short supply - willing and able to communicate, and not afraid to learn new things. Methinks you are way ahead of the curve.

With that thought in mind, this will be my final update on the WiFi syncing saga. Since updating to iOS 8.1 on Monday, both of my iOS devices (iPhone 6 and 5S) have now successfully synced to iTunes 12 each day for 4 days and counting. Not to say it's been a trouble free experience - WiFi syncing has always had it's glitches - but at least now the problems are the "normal" WiFi syncing problems and no longer a compete failure of both iOS and iTunes to communicate with each other.

Have a great weekend all! I will "see" you all around the discussion forums.
