That's a lot of different factors to tease apart.

FWIW, I saw the problem right after iOS 8, with an iMac that had been upgraded to Yosemite betas.

And, I saw it with a retina iMac that had factory-installed Yosemite.

I suspect that the problems I've seen twice recently arise from some different cause because it takes a Mac restart to get iTunes out of its snit.

Other than that, I've had no issues since the two updates Monday.

Actually, yes.

Troubleshooting a whole different problem with my iPad, I restored it. That didn't make it act any differently from my iPhone 6, which has not been restored, only updated via WiFi.

As I wrote, I think the two updates last Monday fixed WiFi syncing for me for a week. The issue today, that required an iMac restart is something else breaking WiFi syncing, I think.

When I've run into little hiccups with iTunes in the past, I'd open Activity Monitor, kill the AppleMobileDeviceHelper process (while iTunes was still running), then restart iTunes. That always seemed to kick start the iMac into looking for the iOS devices. Sometimes I'd have to wake up and unlock the iOS devices, but once I did, they'd pop up in iTunes. Previously to finding the AppleMobileDeviceHelper process trick, I'd reboot my iMac as well; it essentially does the same thing.

Your attitude during all this is refreshing. There have been many on this forum who have thrown up their hands and cursed Apple for less. I'm thinking either you are in the technology business or you at least understand and appreciate the underlying complexity involved to make even this one aspect (wifi syncing) "just work".

Anyways, cheers to you, and a very Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I think you're right. I had read about AppleMobileDeviceHelper early on in this bug hunt, but forgot it. I'll be sure to try that next time. I suppose one could even set up a macro to do all the steps. (Although that might be a bit pessimistic.)

I'm not a computer professional, just someone who's used Macs since 1988 (Mac OS 4).

Its been several months now since iOS 8 release, why am i still experiencing issues over wifi syncing? After following some steps i found on the forums and in this thread and having no luck, i have given up with having the setting ticked and went to sycn my phone with the setting unticked and go back to normal syncing via cable, but even that aint working now, it gets to preparing to update and gets stuck... Help!? even when i just try to sync a track or an app with that setting ticked it goes preparing to update and gets stuck!

If your iDevice won't sync while connected with the USB cable, you have a different problem than this thread is focussed on (WiFi syncing.)

What do you mean by "preparing update"? This is a dialog you get when updating to a new iOS version. That's also not what this thread is about.

It's hard to offer advice if we can't tell exactly what's going on with your iDevice and Mac.

For me, and I'm guessing most everyone else who contributed to this thread, iOS 8.1.2 fixed the WiFi syncing issue. Or at least it returned it to the state it was before iOS 8. Sometimes a device disappears except when wired to the Mac. A restart of the Mac usually fixes that. Sometimes a restart of the iDevice fixes it.

Hi, i will put it in more detail.
Recently received an iPhone 6 Plus 128 GB, Getting it out of the box i set it up as new iPhone as it was not registering any of my iCloud Backups then updated it to 8.1.2 then synced it with my Windows 8.1 Laptop to get all music and apps etc on to the phone via the USB cable as i thought over WIFI it would take forever to do all that data. I then went in to the Sumurary page of the phone and CHECKED the Sync Over WIFI button. Then Clicked apply and it sycned the settings over. On the 8th i noticed that My iPhone 6 Plus was not appearing in the devices list on iTunes. So i got the cable, plugged in the phone and checked to see if that setting was ticked, Everything looked the way it should of looked, Sync Over Wifi was ticked and Manually Manage Music and Videos was Ticked, So i unpluged phone from laptop and restarted it, no luck, restarted laptop and iTunes, no joy. Re-connected the phone to the laptop via the USB cable and it came up so i synced what i needed to and it worked fine. However today i just downloaded some new music and wanted to sync it to the phone and went to go get the cable. Then i remembered that i had wifi selected on the settings and came on here looked around for some solutions, found this thread, and a few others, talking about a temporary fix by disabling the Handoff etc, tried a few solutions none worked. So i plugged phone into laptop to sync the songs VIA USB and they wernt syncing. The tracks were appearing on the phone but were not playable they would just skip. So i tried Unchecking Syncing Over Wifi and then Clicked Apply and it said at the top Preapairing for Update, it got stuck on that for about 5 minuets.

Now whenever i try to do anything to the phone in iTunes it gets to Waiting for Changes to be Applied and dose not progress.
I have a fair few apple deceives but i dont usually get technical difficulties with them. I can sync to the iPad Air Over wifi but thats still on iOS 7...

Ideal would like to get the iPhone to sync over wifi so i dont have to keep unpluging the cable but it aint doing anything atm. Hence my comment on this thread.

Following up after a couple of months:

In general WiFi sync has worked for me since November and iOS 8.1.2.

However, I've noticed two incidents a couple of weeks apart that were so nearly identical that I'm suspicious that the same thing happened.

First, my iPhone 6 went missing from iTunes. Plugging it in with USB-Lightning cable worked fine, but it dropped off the list as soon as I unplugged it.

Second, my iPhone 6 wasn't updating Reminders. On checking, I found it would not accept my iCloud password. Powering the iPhone down and back up fixed the problem without any further action. In other words, I wasn't logged out of iCloud, the phone just couldn't contact it. Reminders immediately updated after the restart. In addition, as soon as I got home, my iPhone 6 appeared in iTunes.

In both cases, other functions, such as phones, all apps (that I used), LTE, etc. worked fine.

I ended up getting my replaced from Apple.
Funny thing is that when i called Apple Care Support, 3/4 people that i talked to insisted that trying to sync Apps, Music and Videos over WiFI from iTunes was impossible and the 'Sync your iPhone over Wifi' is to do with iCloud. LOL???

But something i will add, Have u tried, or has it been mentioned to plug the iDevice it to power? Mine now appears in iTunes and allows me to sync over Wifi, but if i restart iTunes my iPhone wont appear automatically, What i do is plug it in to power, unlock it and it works flawlessly (i can then unplug it etc) but i have found that while its plugged in, it syncs faster over wifi.
