I'm seeing this too. I did see it previously with an iPhone 5 and Mavericks and an iPhone 5 and Yosemite beta. But that was occasionally.

Since getting my iPhone 6 (and updating to iOS 8) it's become the usual thing. Sometimes my iPhone 6 isn't listed in iTunes. Sometimes it's listed, but when I select it, it disappears, or I get a message saying the iPhone can't be found.

I've tried all the tips here: http://osxdaily.com/2013/02/17/wi-fi-sync-not-working-fix-ios/

Changing my iMac computer name helped for about 24 hours.

I've also tried all the tips in this thread.

I've filed a report to Apple with Feedback Assistant.

Double BINGO! This network reset tip worked for my iOS 8.0 device. Now when I fire up iTunes on my Mac, it is able to list both my iOS 7.1.2 and iOS 8.0 devices. Noticed a few things during the network reset performed on the iOS 8.0 devices. They the following:

1. Removed all the iOS 8.0 device's network settings, wifi and mobile networks (this is expected and users will be able to reinstate quite easily for their primary wifi, i.e. work or home networks, however, it would have flushed out all the special SSL enabled wifi settings using profiles, so will still need to reinstate these and might not be straight forward for users).

2. It changed the name of iOS 8.0 device! Noticed that immediately when the device showed up in iTunes.

3. iTunes had some difficulty locating the iOS 8.0 device while the device is in sleep mode (i.e. screen off). Had to hit the home button to wake it up and then it showed up in iTunes.

Other then the above, I think Wifi Sync with iTunes for iOS 8.0 devices should be good to go!

Manuel, thank you very much for your tip/trick to get Wifi Sync with iTunes in iOS 8.0 working again, greatly appreciated!

Following up, both my iPhone 6 and iPad have now disappeared from iTunes.

After that happened, I plugged in my iPhone and synced. When I unplugged it, it vanished from iTunes. This has happened repeatedly now.

If I try iTunes WiFi Sync from the phone, it can't find my iMac.

Otherwise, WiFi is working perfectly.

I've tried all the tip I've read here.

Here's an interesting tidbit: If I uncheck Sync with this iPhone over WiFi, then quit iTunes and restart it, the box is checked again.

Aarrrgggghhhhhhhh! That makes so much sense and I opened settings immediately. The phone name had indeed been changed to "iPhone," so I renamed it to what it's always been, opened iTunes (so hopefully ... it's quite pitiful) and was sure it would see my phone now. It does not. Crying isn't something I do on the premise that it solves nothing, but I have to say I'm quite close to giving in ..... 😢

Interesting. My iPhone 6 was also reset to just iPhone.

This is an iPhone 6 and just restored from my iPhone 5 backup (which was running iOS 8), and this phone has not had iOS 8 installed later, so it's not the upgrade that did this. It's possible that it never picked up my iPhone name from the backup, but I think I would have noticed.

So I put my old iPhone name in, restarted, and as soon as the restarted iPhone acquired WiFi, it showed up in iTunes. It could have just been the restart.

Our iPad did not have its name changed. A restart, however, caused it to show up in iTunes too.
