IOS 8 Home button bug

After upgrading to IOS 8 when I press the home button once to exit an app it is registered as a double click and brings me to the multitasking app switcher instead of the home screen. This didn't happen on IOS 7 - I've got an iPhone 5. Any ideas?

This was one of the first things I did after I "upgraded" to iOS 8, and it had no effect on the behaviour of the home button in regards to the issue where a tap sometimes acts like a double-tap, or the multitasking menu flashes briefly and returns to the app/homescreen. All it did was disable the recent contacts display.

So basically I'm still hoping that iOS 8.1 will fix the bug, as some people have been reporting, but at this point I'm not really overly optimistic about anything. 😟

Ive been having the same problem since the first minutes after I installed iOS 8. Tried out a lot of different things to solve the problem but nothing has worked. The problem is really illogical in its behavior and it can go an hour without appearing and then all of a sudden it appears more or less each other time I press the home button.

I posted this in another thread regarding the same problem but it feels worth repeating:

"Just got off the phone with an AppleCare Senior Advisor here in Sweden regarding the problem and the response was terrible ending up with the Advisor just hanging up on me, its a totally unacceptable behavior.

Generally its outrageous how Apple treat there customers. I have a fully functioning and working phone, I update to iOS 8 and it starts behaving like crap and Apple doesnt take any responsibility AT ALL and starts blaming the hardware and that I might have mishandled the phone giving me the problem."

I'm absolutely certain that ScottNY71, dubzau and a couple of others are right. This is a hardware issue that iOS 8 doesn't play nicely with, but iOS 7 was more forgiving about.

I had this problem with an iPhone 5, and replacing the home button ribbon cable fixed it completely. I have had no problems since, not a single accidental double-click.

I'm sure it's no coincidence that this is older, well-used phones that have the problem. The home buttons are wearing out. All of the "fixes" that have been posted pretty much involve using the home button a bit -- which also made mine work more reliably for a while! It probably just temporarily dislodged the dust or whatever was causing the problem.

i guess the good news is iOS 8.1 is reported to be more forgiving again, but I'm pretty sure anyone who had this problem can expect further signs that the button is wearing out in future. Not that I'd necessarily recommend doing the ribbon replacement surgery yourself, it's tricky! But it does work.

Hello guys,

i just came back from the Apple Store and they fixed the issue by replacing the home button! Now I don't have that horrid issue! Just be aware of your phone is out of warranty it's $29 to replace the button. I got mine free because I told them I had an issue with the home button last year when the phone was still in warranty. The button kept sticking and not functioning and all they did so the guy told me was clean it. It he would have replaced it I wouldn't have been in this issue and to top it off they had no record of it which ****** me even more!
