Cannot delete music in iOS 8 on iPad

Seem to have lost the ability to slide a song title or album title in Music app on an iPad that has been upgraded to iOS a 8 to delete a song/album. In addition, cannot find the Music app listed under usage data which was the method to delete all songs. Is this bug in iOS8 on an iPad?

Settings>General>Usage>Manage Storage>Music> is where you can delete albums and songs. Swiping across songs in the songs list still works for me. Perhaps you should try closing the Music app and reset the iPad.

In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

I had the same issue many of you have - SOLVED!!!

It turns out that I had music in my iTunes account which was purchased a long time ago and the Music app on my iPhone was still pulling it up from the cloud (I assume because I never downloaded it to my phone until now).

Here's what you have to do (very simple):

-go to the iTunes app on your iPhone

-click on "More"

-click on "Purchased"

-click on "Music"

-click on "All Songs"

-click on "Download All"

Once they are all downloaded to your iPhone, you can go into your Music app and the "swipe left" feature is now active allowing you to swipe left over any song or album to deleting those individual songs or albums within the Music app!

I'm sure alot of people here are having this problem, & i also wasnt able to delete cached songs on my iphone 5 (ios 8.1), so heres what i did

(this will not delete the song from icloud)

1. go to settings-music- if you have 'show all music' unchecked, check it and make sure you are signed out of home sharing.

2. go back to the music app and the song that was 'cached' before you did step 1 should be uncached now

(the writing should be grey and have an icloud download option next to it),

3. press the icloud download button of the songs you wish to delete

4. after the songs you wanted to delete have been downloaded from icloud go to: settings-general-usage- *under storage* tap manage storage-music

then tap edit & then delete the songs u wished to have deleted.

5.after you have deleted those songs go to settings-music- & uncheck 'show all music'

Hope this helped, worked for me 😝

I think we seem to BE the quality assurance, - same as with microsoft and windows H8, we are the test rats. I learned my lesson - i.e. don`t upgrade to a new O/S until all the bugs have been worked out. On present form this means just before the NEXT upgrade lol

I use synthesizer Apps on my ipad to make music, literally TWO THIRDS of them stopped working when I upgraded to IOS8. I was lucky enough to be able to roll back to IOS7 because I backed up.

Very bad form Apple.

Re: Cannot delete music in iOS 8 on iPad in response to Swtchld | This solved my question

I think I figured out that this is an issue syncing with iCloud. In the settings for Music, I turned on Show All Music, that includes showing all music, including everything stored in iCloud. Well, all my music showed as being stored in iCloud and needing to be downloaded to my iPad, including the songs that Music said were already on my iPad. So, I tried to download one of those songs. After downloading, I could then delete it from Music by swiping left and having the delete button show up! After that deletion, the song does not show up as being on my iPad. In addition, after downloading songs from iCloud, then the Music app does show up with those songs in the usage>manage storage list of apps. And, the downloaded songs show up as being able to be deleted from there, too, in addition from the Music app. So, I think the list is in kind of a messed up state, with it showing music as being on the iPad (which it may be, since I can listen to those songs) but they are not deletable unless they are first "downloaded" from iCloud.

I agree with what SWTCHLD stated (copied and pasted above)...I was unable to delete 4 songs from my ipad - which I had never downloaded. They were still stored in the cloud and showed the cloud icon on the song detail...I took Swtchld's advice and downloaded those 4 songs from the cloud, then I was able to slide each song to the left (individually) and the delete option appeared.

This may not be the "correct" fix - but it solved my issue. Now I am in the process of putting only the select items that I want back onto my iPad.

Thanks Swtchld for the excellent advice.

I, too, had this issue and got so frustrated. Why can't I delete music that is clearly on my iPhone?! After using CCleaner on one of my computers, I decided to check if there was something similar for iPhone. Upon doing some brief research, I found an app called CCleaner Doctor. I'm apprehensive about paying for apps, but saw lots of 5* ratings so decided to give it a try. After clearing the cache once through this app, I found that about 2/3 of the "phantom music" was gone when I checked it under Usage. Upon clearing it a second time, all of the phantom songs went away! So, downloading this $2 app has saved me a lot of headaches. Hopefully Apple will address this issue in a further update, but I wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else out there.

After reading everyone's ideas and questions I was able to find a solution on how to delete songs off the iPad that I downloaded from my iPad (or the gray out songs when viewing it on a computer.)

I connected my iPad to my computer -

Ipad>music> sync music> select artist you want to delete tracks from.

Once its done syncing you can delete it off your iPad by swiping. Yay!

Hope this helped. I used the same idea as those who mention to re-download the tracks and then delete. Same idea here but for some strange reason this way works.
