Q: accessibility zoom in iOS 8 problems

Hello all!

i am visually impaired and i have ben using iOS and mac devices for many years

Especially in iOS, zoom feature is so handy that helped me so much with my daily tasks!

Everything was working perfectly until iOS 8

I know iOS 8 brought many features for people with disabilities and made improvements for people with vision loss

I'm experiencing 2 issues

1. When zooming in if you tap once there is a new black dialogue window with different features that is quite annoying and you have to tap somewhere else so as to disappear (this can't be disabled from settings,) and i am not talking about the controller

2. Zooming in now isn't that accurate and smooth...i have turned on "Zoom on focus" but still zooming in with the three finger  gesture isn't that smooth

has anyone had any similar experiences?i hope they fix this since this is on of the main reasons why i seriously love apple. Because it had all people with disabilities in mind and added features when none else  even cared!

thank you all!

iPhone 5s, iOS 8

I have a similar problem. I have it set to a full screen zoom, but even though this is checked, it keeps using the small zoom window, which is unuseable. If I go in, and recheck the full screen, it'll work properly again for half an hour

Please also add turning on and off greyscale to Siri

In an unrelated note, the drawers for control center and notifications randomly stop working

All is on ipad 3 running ios8, iPhone 5s same.

do you find it as well that when zooming in isn't that smooth and lose a bit of  where to focus compared to the previous iOS?

NO more so than the rest of the OS. THERE SEEMS TO BE ISSUES WITH MEMORY ALLOCATION AND LEAKS

the black box options is quite annoying.. if you press the screen when zoomed in it gets o the way

and there is no option to toggle this off

as for me i think zoom in an d focus definitely isn't that accurate as in previous iOS versions

At least someone else mentiones the problem from which I thought I was the only one suffering from.

I have three problems with the new iOS8 zoom function

    - zooming in is indeed not that smooth anymore. definitely slower also

    - The zoom function switches from IN screen to ON screen without changing settings

    - When zoomed in for a while, the screen starts to blink. Like zoomfunction on-off every second. Mostly followed by a hangup and/or bluescreen

    @EstrellaWeb exactly!

i have hope though since i know that there are people from the apple team that will see this and will improve ths

update: updated to iOS 8 .0.2 but the above mentioned issues still exist

its annoying its not that accurate since this is the main feature i use for my daily needs

I Have the same issues with zoom.

    1. Zoom keeps going back to windowed mode even though it is set for full screen mode. Going into zoom settings and bouncing between modes will resolve it for a short time.

    2. zoom is no longer smooth. Tends to lag a bit and is jumpy in movement.

    3. Zooming in and out sometimes requires you to move your hand left and right in portrait mode.

    4. zooming out sometimes won't respond until you zoom in further.

PS. My zoom switched back to windowed mode while writing this. There seems to be a link to the window zoom mode and the keyboard being displayed.

really glad that i am not the only one and a bit worried that this hasn't been fixed

since i have bouncing all betas of ios 8the problem started on firstbeta

and i thought this was a problem with memory management

but this  continued on the public release as wll

i don't know if any of you have Macs as well but the zoom in feature there lags  in some cases

for example if you open a new safari window and you see your top sites that you have visited if youzoom in there  it gets out of focus

Worse than that. My phone is now stuck at an insanely high magnification. (One digit of the clock on the lock screen takes up the entire screen!)

    1. Three finger tap and slide no longer zooms in and out.

    2. Pinch and zoom does nothing.

    3. I am zoomed on so far, I can't even restart.

    4. Cannot be used in any way, at all.

    5. No way to escape this except hold down both buttons until the phone dies.

    6. My phone STARTS partially zoomed in.

    ***, Apple!!!

I think the problem is that Apple changed the active zooming gesture from up-and-down to side-to-side.  If you swipe side-to-side with 3 fingers after taping twice-and-hold with 3 fingers, it is smooth as it ever was.  Also 3 taps with 3 fingers brings up the contextual controls for toggling full screen zoom/window zoom (and other controls).

am having the same issue with the zoom, once I triple tap to activate zoom works fine for a bit then the whole OS seems to lock up, at which point I have to restart the iPad and then triple to to turn zoom off, by the way this happens on both the iPad and iPhone, this issues really needs to be fixed.

Now with the other issues of the zoom going from full screen back into windows mode, I think I found a work around.  I Noticed this issue several months back I would go into settings and change it to full screen mode and at some point it would go back into window mode, when I checked in setting it was still set to full screen so I would uncheck it then recheck it want back into full screen mode for a bit and would go the same.  Then I noticed it only happened when the keyboard was called it would window the screen and keep the keyboard at normal size when I finished with the keyboard zoom stayed in window mode, this in my opinion is a bug so this is how I fixed this issue for anyone who is having the problem.

    1 Go to settings-General

    2 Go to accessibility

    3 Go to Zoom

    4 turn on Follow Focus

    5 Turn on Zoom Keyboard

This should take care of that issue, I do not like the keyboard being on zoom but that is the only way for now to keep zoom in full screen.  Once I did this it has never gone into Window Mode again.  What I do is zoom when I want to see something and triple tap out of zoom to use the keyboard.

This is my issue with Apple again IOS 8 seems half baked, I expect bugs in any OS that is the nature of the beast, but issues like lockups and things going in and out of modes seem to be nothing more than laziness on Apple's part.

I'm also vision impaired, I have Stargardt Macular Degeneration to be more precise. Zoom on my iPhone, my MacBook Pro  and my iMac is absolutely essential to my daily life.

    I'm having the same problems:

    - Zoom keeps going back to windowed mode(which I fin terrible by the way)

    - Zoom is not smooth anymore.

Please Apple, I love your products and I love the zoom feature on all of your devices(I'm using it right now to write this reply). Please just get the iPhone zoom back to what it was.

Glad to see i am not alone here

guys/girls lets make this topic even bigger

i know some of the apple team is watching threads around here and i had been contacted in the past on other issues so indefinitely believe that apple can help us make things easier for our daily needs

as everyone said we use this feature not for fun, we use this for our daily tasks and this is probably on of the main reasonswe love apple

at least this is my view

sinc ei have so many apple products accessibility is the main feature for me that attracted me in the first place!

so if anyone form the apple team is reading this..please make things easier for us.

we need a smoother more accurate zoom  on iOS 8

    Hi everyone,

My wife is also visually impaired and was struggling with the zoom window. I looked into what was in the new update.

Try going into Settings > General > zoom > Zoom region and switching it from "window zoom" to "full screen zoom"

    Working for us, good luck!
